Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer beats rival Warner 2-0 for second straight win

LAKE WALES, Fla. (October 3, 2020) – Coming off a strong 3-1 win at home its last time out, the Webber International University men's soccer team kept the momentum going with a 2-0 shutout victory over its Crooked Lake rival Warner University on a wet and rainy Saturday night at Royals Field.

After beating Warner (1-4 overall, 0-3 The Sun Conference) twice last season to claim the Crooked Lake Cup for the first time since 2016, Webber (3-4, 2-3) got off to a great start in its task to bring home the cup again this season. The Warriors and the Royals will meet up again one more time during the regular season this year during Webber's Senior Day on Saturday, October 31.

The first goal of the match came in the 18th minute on a header by Andy Obregon assisted by Sebastian Lago. It was the third goal of the season so far for Obregon, a freshman from Apopka, Florida, and was the first assist for Lago, a freshman from Miami, Florida.

In all for the first half, Webber outshot Warner 7-2 with the only shot on goal for either team being Obregon's score.

Then just over two minutes into the second half, senior David Negrin Ruiz, who netted a hat trick during Webber's win over Ave Maria last Wednesday, made it 2-0 Warriors with his fifth goal of the season.

By the end of the match, the Warrior defense had limited the Royals to only four total shots and zero shots on goal. Alex Marciulonis earned the start and faced only three shots through the first 71 minutes before giving way to Fabricio Verdun to finish off the match.

Negrin Ruiz finished with a match-high six shot attempts for Webber, two more then the entire Royals team, which had the same number of attempts as Obregon did (4). The Warriors' other shot attempts on the night came from Dashaun Morris (2) and Agustin Sanda (1).

"The boys did very well tonight," spoke Head Coach Neil Cockburn. "I feel that we are starting to find our rhythm. We just have to keep continuing in the right direction as we get ready to play Florida Memorial."

The Warriors will now gear up for a three-match home stand on the Warrior Turf Field. Webber will first host Florida Memorial University at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, and then one week later the Warriors will take on Southeastern University for the second time this season at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14. The home stand will then conclude with a second meeting against St. Thomas University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 17.
