BLUFFTON, S.C. (October 17, 2020) – The Webber International University women's cross country team put together its best performance of the season so far as both the Warriors' men's and women's cross country teams competed in the 2020 Sand Shark Cross Country Invitational held on Saturday evening on the campus of the University of South Carolina Beaufort. It was the first time in the 14-year history of the race that the event has been held on USCB's newly-designed, on-campus course in Bluffton, South Carolina.
The Lady Warriors finished in third place out of seven teams in the women's 5K with a score of 103 and a total time of 1:50.22 (22:05 average), trailing only NCAA Division-II Flager College (21; 1:35.16) in first and No. 17 Southeastern University (48; 1:40.30) in second. Webber finished ahead of another NCAA D-II school, the University of South Carolina Aiken (105; 1:51.40), in fourth, and fellow Sun Conference member and host school USCB (108; 1:52.12) in fifth.
The Lady Warriors were led by
Kendal Clark (20:16.93) who finished in 11th place out of 47 runners and was the fastest Webber runner on the women's side for the first time so far this season.
Not far behind Clark was
Sage Lyons (20:29.52) in 14th. Rounding it out for Webber was
Saw Ahmara (21:50.77) in 23rd place,
Aria Green (23:32.79) in 30th, and
Lauren Brown (24:11.82) in 35th.
The Webber men's team, meanwhile, finished in sixth place out of eight teams in the men's 8K race with a score of 146 and a total time of 2:38.25 (31:41 average). Out of the 63 runners in the men's field,
Andrew Villicana (29:23.91) was the Warriors' best finisher in 30th place.
Next was
Travis Holton (30:12.07), the lone returner on this year's Webber men's cross country team, who finished second amongst the Warriors for the first time so far this season as he took 33rd.
Kevin Bond (31:18.13) finished in 37th for the Warriors,
Tyo Smith (32:45.78) was 45th, and
Leo Campos Jr. (34:44.68) contributed to Webber's top-five for the first time so far this season as he finished in 53rd.
Carter Reynolds (37:32.73) added a finish of 60th.
The Warriors' final race of the 2020 regular season will be a return to this same course in Bluffton, South Carolina, in one week as Webber competes in the NAIA Southern States Challenge on the evening of Saturday, October 24. The Sun Conference Championships will then take place on Saturday, November 7, in Ave Maria, Florida.
