BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 17, 2020) – The Webber International University men's soccer team saw its three-match Sun Conference winning streak come to an end on Saturday as the Warriors lost 4-1 against St. Thomas University on the Warrior Grass Field.
After entering the match looking for its second straight win over a top-three team in The Sun Conference, Webber (4-5 overall, 3-4 TSC) stayed competitive with the first-place team in the league standings in terms of points for over 70 minutes before surrendering three late goals in a less than 12-minute span.
Earlier in the match, the Warriors battled back from a 1-0 deficit with a score 10 minutes after the first goal by St. Thomas (7-2, 6-1) as freshman
Prince James scored on the assist from
Andy Obregon. It was a beautiful goal by James, who slid the ball past the keeper to the far post for his first career collegiate goal.
Before that, Webber nearly scored first a couple of times as
David Negrin Ruiz had a shot saved in the eight minute,
Daniel Perez had a shot saved in the 16th minute, and
Jay Skelcher-Maxwell did the same in the 22nd minute before the Bobcats broke through with a penalty kick goal in the 28th minute.
Then after the Warriors fell behind 3-1 after two goals for St. Thomas in less than two minutes, Negrin Ruiz nearly cut the deficit in half with just under 15 minutes left to play when his shot after a nice pass from Perez hit the post.
In goal for the Warriors was
Alex Marciulonis, who finished with six saves while
Fabricio Verdun added one stop in the final four minutes.
"I am very proud of my boys' performance today," spoke Head Coach
Neil Cockburn. "It is very hard to play against one of the top teams in the conference with only two days of rest, and that's where I felt that we lost the game. However, the boys are still positive about the season and I look forward to giving Keiser a good game next weekend."
Next up for Webber will be a third straight match against a top-three team in The Sun Conference standings as in one week, the Warriors will travel South to West Palm Beach, Florida, to battle No. 22 nationally-ranked Keiser University starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 24. It will be a much needed week off between matches for a Webber team that is coming off back-to-back intense matches against two teams receiving votes in the NAIA national coaches' poll at the end of the last season.
