No. 16 baseball splits final two games of opening series with Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla. (January 25, 2020) – One day after coming back from five runs down to win its 2020 season opener at home, the No. 16 Webber International University baseball team split the final two games of its season-opening series with rival Warner University, dropping game one of the Saturday doubleheader on Warner's home field 2-0 before winning the series finale 13-5.

Webber (2-1) did all of its damage in game two of the doubleheader in only two innings as the Warriors put up an eight-spot in the top of the third inning and then added five more runs in the fourth.

The big third inning for Webber featured three two-RBI hits, first from Bryan Eusebio, then from Nick Martinez and lastly from Norberto Navarro to wrap up the inning.

Navarro then added his second two-RBI hit of the game one inning later with a double to right center to cap the scoring for the Warriors.

In all, Navarro finished 3-for-5 with 4 RBI's in the game while Martinez was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk and Eusebio was 2-for-4 with two runs. Rougie Odor and Victor Florentino also both scored twice in the contest, combining with Martinez and Eusebio to account for nine of Webber's 13 runs across the two innings.

Starter Bryce McDonald (1-0) earned the win by allowing only one run, one walk and five hits through his four innings of work in what was only a seven-inning game.

In the first game of the day, Zach Mather (0-1) got the starting nod and did not allow any earned runs while giving up only two hits in total and two walks while striking out four batters. Unfortunately, a leadoff triple for Warner (1-2) in the bottom of the first inning followed by an error by the Warriors' third baseman on the next at bat put Webber behind.

The Warriors' only three hits in game one came from a leadoff single in the third inning by Florentino before being stranded at second base, a two-out single by Martinez in the fifth inning, and a one-out bunt single in the top of sixth by Carlo Mancillas.

"It was good to have to bounce back after an emotional Friday night opener," said new Webber Head Coach Baseball Coach Collin Martin. "Mather gave us a chance in game one and that's all we could ask for. Their guy did a good job of taking the sting out of our bats and unfortunately for us, our lineup fell flat. Bouncing back after a loss to win a series is important in this league and it was great to see the offense spark up behind Bryce to give him his first collegiate win. We've got plenty to work on and plenty to look forward to next weekend against Columbia International."

Next up for Webber baseball is a three-game series back at home on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field. The Warriors will welcome Columbia International University for a single game starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 31, before kicking off the month of February with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 1.
