Women’s basketball sees winning streak end during final seconds at Coastal Georgia

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (January 18, 2020) – The Webber International University women's basketball team overcame a 12-point halftime deficit and found itself in a tie ballgame on the road with under 30 seconds left, but unfortunately the Warriors' three-game conference winning streak came to an end during The Sun Conference's Women's Basketball Game of the Week. Webber fell by a close score of 64-62 after the game-winning basket by the College of Coastal Georgia with only 1.5 seconds left.

With Webber trailing 48-45 going into the fourth quarter, Breyonna Reed scored to get the Warriors to within one at 48-47 before the first 3-pointer of the game by Eletra Graham put Webber ahead at 54-53 with eight minutes left to play.

Then, after a drawn out 5-0 stretch in favor of Costal Georgia that took more than four minutes off the clock, Webber tied it at 59-59 after two free throws by LeAndra Franklin and a second 3-pointer by Graham with just under three minutes to go.

The Warriors then took a two-point lead at 61-59 with around two minutes left thanks to two more free throws by Franklin, finishing off a quick 7-1 Webber run. Unfortunately, a big offensive rebound by the Mariners on their next possession led to a 3-pointer that put Coastal Georgia back up by one point at 62-61.

One free throw by Taniya Patrick tied the game up yet again at 62-62 with 1:30 left, and the score stayed that way until another offensive rebound by Coastal Georgia led to the Mariners' game winner with only 1.5 seconds on the clock.

The Warriors were unable to get a final shot attempt off as the clock ran out on Graham trying to create separation for a desperation heave.

"I am very proud of how our girls battled back and made this a game, and I promise we will learn from this going forward," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Grady Morrell.

Webber's leading scorer was Patrick with 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field. She was also only one rebound shy of her seventh double-double of the season with nine boards.

Franklin finished with 12 points, six rebounds and a game-high three assists while also finishing 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Emmarrie Carmen finished with 10 points and five boards while Reed, Graham and Dysheka Price all finished with six points and Price also had a season-best six rebounds.

In the first half, Webber struggled against Coastal Georgia's 2-3 zone, going 0-for-9 from 3-point range during the first 20 minutes. However, Webber connected on four 3-pointers in the second half, two each from Price and Graham, to get back into it and force the game to come down to the wire.

Starting with a floater by Franklin, the Warriors used a 6-0 run to get a 14-point deficit halfway through the second quarter down to an eight-point margin at 29-21 with two minutes left before the intermission.

Then, after the Warriors still went into the break down by 12 points at 35-23, it was Webber who started the second half by bringing the pressure as the Warriors opened the third quarter with a 10-1 run to get back to within three points at 36-33.

Webber then kept the run going and tied the game at 40-40 on a pair of free throws by Reed followed by a 3-pointer by Price, the Warriors' first three of the game, making it a 17-5 run in all to start the second half for Webber.

With its three-game winning streak over, Webber, which began the day tied for fifth place in The Sun Conference Women's Basketball standings, fell to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in conference games while Coastal Georgia, which began the day in a three-way tie for second place in the conference, improved to 12-5 and 7-2.

Webber will now try to start a new winning streak as the Warriors host the Bobcats of St. Thomas University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Despite a spectacular 30-point and 17-rebound effort by Patrick that resulted in her being named The Sun Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the first of two times this season during the first meeting between Webber and St. Thomas, the Warriors fell by a close score of 77-75 on the road back on November 23.
