MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (September 21, 2019) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team was swept by Florida Memorial University, 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-23), in Sun Conference action on Saturday inside the FMU Wellness Center in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Statistical leaders for Webber were
Laura Embry with 10 assists and five digs,
Kalameli Matautia with six kills and six digs,
Svenja Koenig with five kills, a .364 attack percentage and five digs, and
Jessica Terry with six digs.
The Warriors hit exactly .000 percent in both of the first and third sets, but were a little better in the second set, hitting .333 percent in that one.
Webber actually led 15-11 in set number two before a 7-1 run for FMU made it 18-16 in favor of the Lions.
However, the Warriors answered the FMU run with three straight kills by Matautia, Koenig and
RayGene Garner to go ahead 19-18. Unfortunately, after an FMU service error made it 20-19 Warriors, the Lions put together a 5-0 run featuring two kills and two service aces to take control at 24-20.
In the third set, Webber again led 15-11 and also led 17-14 before four straight points by the Lions put them ahead 18-17.
Later on in the final set, Webber got to within two at 23-21 after a kill by Terry and then made it 24-23 after a kill by
Salla Rautiainen and a Lions' ball handling error, but it would not be enough as a kill by FMU's Correa Daphinie on the ensuing play ended the match.
Webber fell to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in The Sun Conference in 2019 while FMU stayed perfect in conference play at 4-0 and improved to 9-4 overall. It was the first ever defeat for Webber against FMU as the Warriors were previously 24-0 all-time against the Lions. Additionally, the Lions are now on a program-best seven-match winning streak while the four conference wins tied the school's record in that category.
Webber will now host three matches in a row, beginning with a nonconference meeting with Florida College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24.
