MACON, Ga. (August 25, 2019) – After a comeback win in double overtime during its 2019 season opener two days ago, the Webber International University women's soccer team had a little bit of an easier go at it on Sunday, this time coming away with a 5-0 win against NCAA Division-III Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.
Megan Warner scored three times in the first six minutes of the match, including the first goal of the contest just 42 seconds into the action. It was the first career hat trick for the senior from Watford, England.
Each of Warner's first and third goals of the match were assisted by junior
Leah Borders, who went on to score the final goal of the match herself in the 60th minute.
It was the second goal in two matches so far this year for Borders, who last season as a sophomore, found the back of the net three times in total. Warner, meanwhile, had her second career multi-goal effort as a Warrior after scoring twice in the team's season opener in 2018, a year in which she finished with a team-best seven goals as a junior.
Webber's other goal on Sunday came off the leg of freshman
Kelcee Jackson to make it 4-0 in the 22nd minute.
In all, the Warriors finished with 32 total shots and 21 shots on goal while Wolves fired 11 shots, eight of which were on goal, resulting in seven saves between two freshman goalkeepers for Webber.
Cameron Laine earned the start and finished with two saves throughout the first half before
Rhiannon Iannotti played the second half and finished with five saves en route to helping the Warriors secure the combined shutout.
Warner would go on to finish with 10 total shots, six of which were on goal, and was only one shot short from matching the number of shots by the entire Wesleyan team.
Next was senior
Francesca Mascali with seven total shots, four of which were on goal, followed by fellow-senior
Angelina Conde with four shots, Borders with three, and senior
Sienna Scully and freshman
Lauren Mueller with two each. In addition to the six Warriors with two or more shots attempts, four others fired at least one attempt on goal.
"This team is coming together very nicely, and it seems like they play for one another," said Webber's Head Women's Soccer Coach
Brian Fallon. "Certainly as a coaching staff, we are very pleased with this weekend's results, but we know that there's still work to be done. I am very confident this team will continue to grow and never run from the work ahead. Generally speaking, it was just a great weekend for Webber women's soccer."
Webber women's soccer will now continue its four-match road trip to start the 2019 season with two more 1 p.m. matches outside of the state of Florida. The Warriors will battle Toccoa Falls College on Saturday, August 31, in Toccoa Falls, Georgia, before finally wrapping up the road trip with a match at Columbia International University on Monday, September 2, in Columbia, South Carolina.
