PENSACOLA, Fla. (August 17, 2019) – The start to the new 2019 campaign for the Webber International University men's soccer team featured a 2-0 shutout victory over Pensacola Christian College on Saturday afternoon in Pensacola, Florida.
Both goals for Webber came from transfer junior
David Negrin Ruiz from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. Negrin Ruiz found the back of the net once in each half, first in the 40th minute and then again in the 57th minute.
After defeating Pensacola Christian 2-1 in its first match of the 2018 season a year ago, a match that saw the Warriors outshoot the Eagles 23-12 overall, Webber took advantage of a similar theme this time around on Saturday by outshooting the opposition 12-3.
Accounting for five of those 12 shots for Webber was Negrin Ruiz, who also finished with three shots on goal. Senior
Matheus Gomes and sophomore
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni were next with three shots apiece while Fernandez Sassoni put two of his attempts on goal. Lastly was junior
Bruno Flores with one shot, which was also on goal.
In the goal, the shutout was recorded by freshman
Felipe Freiria from São José do Rio Preto, Brazil. Freiria finished with two saves in what was his official collegiate debut.
After the Warriors' second exhibition game of the early-going of the season at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 23, at NCAA Division-II St. Leo University, Webber will then play at home on Warrior Field for the first time in 2019 on Saturday, September 7, at 2 p.m. against Trinity Baptist College.
