BABSON PARK, Fla. (August 14, 2019) – The 2019 Webber International University men's soccer season is set to officially begin on the road at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, against Pensacola Christian College.
After that, the Warriors, who will play their second exhibition game of the early-going of the season at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 23, at NCAA Division-II St. Leo University, will then play at home on Warrior Field for the first time in 2019 on Saturday, September 7, at 2 p.m. against Trinity Baptist College.
It will be the 12th season for the Warriors under Head Coach
Neil Cockburn, who last led Webber to the postseason in 2013 after a third-place conference finish during the regular season.
The Webber men's soccer team finished 4-9-2 overall in 2018 and was 1-8 in The Sun Conference, and will be looking to improve its record this year.
Coach Cockburn said, "We have fresh, new faces that will give us more depth this season, and we have great leadership from our seniors that will improve the team and take us to the next level this season."
Looking to lead the Warriors in 2019 and help Webber improve on its record from a year ago are returners
Bryan Mejia,
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni,
Chris Lyon and
Orian Burzic along with newcomers
Sebastian Kreiss,
David Negrin Ruiz,
Rodrigo Flores Iraheta and
Felipe Freiria. Freiria is a freshman goalkeeper from Brazil while Flores Iraheta is a freshman from El Salvador and Kreiss is a rookie from Hudson High School. Negin Ruiz, meanwhile, is a junior forward from Spain.
In 2018, Fernandez Sassoni finished his freshman campaign second on the Warriors with six goals scored, behind only
Baxter Smith who found the back of the net a whopping 11 times. Smith, will now stay on at Webber as a student assistant coach as he finishes up his Master's degree at Webber.
Another big loss for the Warriors from 2018 is
Thomas Debladis, a TSC Honorable Mention selection as a goalkeeper whose spot will look to be filled this year by either Freiria or
Fabricio Verdun, who both will be fighting for the starting spot.
