BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2019) –  The Webber International University softball team improved to 4-0 at home in 2019 with a sweep over William Penn University (Iowa) on Employee Appreciation Day as the Warriors defeated the Statesmen 8-1 and 11-5 on Wednesday afternoon at
Nancy Nichols Field.
Webber fell behind after one inning in both games but used strong offense overall to come out on top.
The Warriors trailed 1-0 after the first inning in game one before scoring eight unanswered runs. Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors used a huge seven-run rally to win it as
Mary-Margaret Maggard led off with a triple to right field but looked like she might be stranded as the next two batters failed to get her in.
However, the Warriors put together a two-out rally to be reckoned with as
Samantha Rolfe doubled to right center to score Maggard,
Kaitlin Cockcroft tripled down the right field line to score Rolfe,
Cassidy Roberts doubled to center to score Cockcroft,
Sabrina Hebding singled to right center to score Roberts, and then finally after two unearned runs, Maggard came back to top it all off with her second triple of the inning, this time down the right field line to score
Alyssa Rodriguez.
In all, Webber put together three triples and five extra base hits in the inning with six total hits after only recording two hits through the first five innings.
Maggard finished the game 3-for-4 while Cockcroft was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the circle,
Raven White (4-1), pitched her second complete game of the season and allowed only six hits, one run and one walk. White has yet to allow more than one run in any of her four starts so far this season.
In game two, Webber trailed 2-0 after the first inning before scoring seven unanswered runs to lead 7-2 after five innings. The Warriors' first runs came via an RBI-double double by
Daisy Riggleman in the second inning, and then Rolfe hit a two-run double in the third inning followed by another RBI-double in the fifth before Cockcroft hit a two-RBI double of her own to cap off the fifth.
After back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the sixth by William Penn, Rolfe struck yet again for the Warriors in the bottom half with her second two-run double and third RBI-double overall of the game. Cockcroft then doubled in the same inning for her second RBI-double of the game before
Anna Schutzler finished it all off with an RBI scoring Cockcroft.
Rolfe would finish 3-for-4 with five RBI's, three doubles and two runs scored; Cockcroft was 3-for-4 with three RBI's and two doubles;
CC Smith was 3-for-4 with three runs scored; and Riggleman was 2-for-3 with two RBI's.
Hebding (2-0) allowed zero walks, two runs and eight hits over her four innings to start the game before
Stacy Pericles finished off the final three frames.
"What a great day for Webber softball," spoke Head Coach
Kristy Burton. "Our bats really came alive today and our pitching staff continues to keep us in every game. Coach
Kendall Core and I were so excited to see our team make adjustments at the plate and continue to put pressure on our opponents. It was the perfect day for our Staff Appreciation Day. We wouldn't be where we are without all the staff and faculty, so thank you to everyone who could make it out today. We are very excited to see our team play consistent softball and ready to start conference play this weekend."
With both teams entering the day on Wednesday with records of 7-5 overall, Webber improved to 9-5 on the season while William Penn fell back to .500 at 7-7.
The Warriors will now open Sun Conference play with two important games on the road at No. 22 Southeastern University. The action will start at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, in Lakeland, Florida.
