BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 23, 2019) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University softball team swept Ave Maria University to improve to 4-0 at home in Sun Conference games so far in 2019, winning game one 11-3 in six innings before coming back from down six twice in game two to win it 10-9 with a seventh-inning walk off.
After a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning in game one by
Samantha Rolfe, Webber trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning with only two hits to its credit to that point.
However, the Warriors' bats came alive in a big way as Webber scored nine times, all with one out, and finished off the game with a single up the middle by
Mary-Margaret Maggard to score
CC Smith and bring the eight-run rule into effect to end it.
Earlier in the inning, it was Maggard who sparked the rally with a home run to right field to tie the game at 3-3.
After Maggard's home run, her fourth of the season, Webber's big inning also featured RBI-hits by
Sabrina Hebding,
Cassidy Roberts,
Alyssa Rodriguez and
Kaitlin Cockcroft.
Raven White earned the game one victory and improved to 7-2 on the year as she finished with only three hits, two earned runs and one walk against her. It was White's fifth complete game of her junior campaign so far.
In the second game, the Warriors found themselves behind big after a five-run top of the second for Ave Maria as Webber's starter,
Stacy Pericles, walked five Gyrenes and hit a batter in the inning.
Webber then trailed 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth until
Beatriz Navarro trigged a two-out rally, reaching first on an error and stealing second before Cockcroft came through with a double down the left field line to get the Warriors on the scoreboard.
Smith then followed to score Cockcroft with a single before Maggard capped off the three-run inning with a single of her own scoring Smith to cut the Warriors' deficit in half.
However, after Ave Maria answered with three runs of its own in the top of the sixth, Webber had to respond down six again, and Webber began to cut into the deficit again thanks to two Gyrene errors in the bottom of the sixth to score four times and make it a two-run ballgame at 9-7.
Then, after a 1-2-3 top of the seventh by
Emma Maitland (6-3) to keep the margin at three, the Warriors' offense went back to work as
Victoria Atkinson started things off with a leadoff single through the left side.
Next up was Rolfe, who doubled to right center to score pinch runner
Anna Schutzler and make it only a one-run game at 9-8.
Dariyen Moss came in to run for Rolfe, and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hebding for the first out of the inning.
The game-tying hit for the Warriors came from Roberts, who delivered with a clutch single to right field to score Moss.
Lastly, after a walk by Rodriguez and a bunt hit by Navarro loaded the bases, Smith drew the two-out walk on a 3-1 pitch to again end the ballgame in favor of the Warriors in unconventional fashion.
Overall on the day offensively, Maggard was 5-for-8 with three RBI's and two runs scored, Rolfe was 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two walks, and Roberts was 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBI's.
"It was two big wins for us today", said the Warriors' Head Softball Coach
Kristy Burton. "We loved to see this team compete until the last out. In both games, we came from behind and never quit. Coach
Kendall Core and I were very happy to see our bats come to life today. It has been a while since we put up a big number on the scoreboard. Scoring 21 runs on the day was a big step for our program. It was not our best day defensively, but if we continue to play with passion and heart, we will give ourselves a chance in every game. I am so proud to see this team continue to step up to each challenge, and we are looking forward to another great week of softball at USCB and then welcoming home our alumni for our games versus Coastal Georgia next Saturday".
Webber moved to 18-8 overall and 7-1 in The Sun Conference, remaining on top of the TSC standings, while Ave Maria fell to 11-23 overall and 1-7 in the TSC.
Webber will head to Hardeeville, South Carolina, Wednesday, March 27, looking to take down No. 13-ranked the University of South Carolina Beaufort in doubleheader action starting at 1 p.m.
