Softball sweeps CCSJ in 2019 home opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 2, 2019) – The 2019 home opener for the Webber International University softball team was a success as the Warriors swept Calumet College of Saint Joseph (Ind.) by scores of 7-1 and 8-3 on Saturday afternoon at Nancy Nichols Field.

Webber (7-5 overall) took over game one with seven runs between the third and fourth innings as Victoria Atkinson got the scoring started with a two-RBI double down the left field line and was followed one batter later by a home run to left center from Samantha Rolfe to make it 4-0 in the third.

In the fourth inning, Atkinson again recorded two RBI's, this time on a single to center, before coming around to score for the second time on the game and make it 7-0.

Atkinson would finish game one 2-for-3 with four RBI's and two runs scored while Mary-Margaret Maggard was 3-for-3 with two runs scored herself, and CC Smith was 2-for-3 also with two runs scored.

In the circle, Stephanie Johnson (1-0) picked up her first win of the season with a complete game effort, allowing seven hits, one run and two walks with five strikeouts.

In the second game, Webber went ahead early again with a four-run inning, this time coming in the second inning. The Warriors added another run in the bottom of the third to go ahead 5-0 and then added two more in the bottom of the fourth to answer a three-run top half of the fourth by CCSJ (0-8) to go ahead 7-3.

Raven White (3-1) earned the game two win with three innings pitched allowing only two hits and zero runs. Sabrina Hebding and Dariyen Moss also performed well from the circle as Hebding completely shut down the Crimson Wave with four strikeouts, zero hits, zero runs and zero walks over 2.1 innings while Moss finished off the final inning allowing only one hit with no walks and no runs.

Offensively, Smith was 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases while Maggard was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI's. Rolfe also added three runs scored.

Head Coach Kristy Burton said, "It was nice to take two wins during our home opener. We were blessed with nice weather and a great crowd, and it was great to see our girls make quick adjustments and continue to put pressure on our opponents. The pitching staff as a whole did a great job keeping us in both games. We are looking forward to continuing this success throughout tomorrow. Go Warriors."

After a pair of scrimmage games against Kalamazoo Valley Community College starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, March 3, at Nancy Nichols Field, the Warriors will return for two more nonconference games against William Penn University (Iowa) starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, before starting conference play three days later. The doubleheader against William Penn on Wednesday will also be Employee Appreciation Day as all staff members at Webber International University are invited for hot dogs, snacks and drinks.
