BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 17, 2019) – In a battle of two teams receiving votes in the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the undefeated home record of 6-0 and the 10-game winning streak for the Warriors each came to an end on Sunday. In the end, the Webber International University softball team fell to Grand View University 7-3 in game one and 7-4 in a heartbreaking game two at
Nancy Nichols Field.
Webber (15-7 overall) actually held a 2-1 advantage in game two after two runs in the bottom of third on an RBI-double to left center by
Victoria Atkinson scoring
Kaitlin Cockcroft and a sacrifice fly to center by
Samantha Rolfe plating Atkinson to answer a run in the top half of the third by Grand View (5-2).
Then, Webber found itself behind again after a three-run home run to right field by Grand View's Lauren Poortinga in the top of the fifth to make it 4-2.
The Warriors, however, did not give up and used a solo home run by Atkinson to left center in the bottom of the fifth to get within one, and then the Warriors put together a great rally in the bottom of the sixth that looked like it might swing everything into Webber's favor.
Webber loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth before
Blakeleigh Boyett drew the walk to score
Sabrina Hebding and tie the game at 4-4.
With no outs and the bases still loaded, the Warriors looked poised to take a lead and put the pressure on the Vikings in the seventh. However, Grand View answered with a pitching change bringing in the designated player Alyx Witt to face the Warriors with the go-ahead run,
Cassidy Roberts, on third and three chances to bring her in.
Witt induced back-to-back fielder's choices back to herself before getting a swinging strikeout as Grand View narrowly escaped in the bottom of the sixth; but then in the top of the seventh, Poortinga struck again with a second three-run home run, this time to left field to essentially end the game and stun the home crowd.
Webber did get back-to-back two-out singles by Hebding and Roberts in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to try and mount another multi-run comeback effort.
Atkinson was 2-for-4 with two RBI's, two runs, a double and a home run in game two while Hebding and Roberts both added two hits as well and Boyett was 1-for-1 with two walks.
In game one, Webber trailed 3-0 after three-and-a-half innings and found itself behind 7-1 in the final inning after a four-run top of the seventh for Grand View.
An RBI-single to left with one out by Atkinson followed by a run-scoring double to right center by Rolfe made it 7-3 as Webber would have tied it if not for the four runs one half inning earlier by the Vikings.
Atkinson went 2-for-3 in game one, finishing 4-for-7 on the day overall with three RBI's and two runs scored.
"It was not our best day today," spoke Head Coach
Kristy Burton. "As a team we struggled at the plate and came out flat. Grand View came out ready to play and took advantage of our mistakes. I think this is a good learning point for our program. Coach
Kendall Core and I look forward to seeing how they respond when we take on Thomas this Wednesday."
Webber will now return to conference action with a doubleheader on the road at Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20.
