MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 7, 2019) – Freshman
Taniya Patrick scored a career-high 27 points for the Webber International University women's basketball team, but it came on a sour night as the Warriors fell 86-78 to Florida Memorial University in a game that eliminated Webber from a potential postseason berth.
Webber played well in the first half and showed late that it could stay with the Lady Lions, but it was two big runs for FMU in the first half that put the Warriors behind.
Webber led 13-11 on a layup by Patrick with three minutes left in the first quarter before an 11-0 Lady Lions' run make it 22-13 FMU with 1:40 left in the period.
The Warriors then closed the period on a 9-2 run to get back to within two at 24-22 at the end of the first quarter, and then Webber took back the lead in the second quarter with an and-one by Patrick to make it 27-26.
However, after a 3-pointer by
Briana Williams gave Webber a four-point lead at 34-30 with 7:50 left before halftime, FMU responded with another double-digit run, this time a 14-0 stretch that put the Warriors behind by 10 at 44-34 with two minutes to go before the break.
Webber shot an impressive 48.4 percent (15-31) from the field in the first half compared to 36.1 percent (13-36) for FMU, but the deficit for the Warriors came in large part due to Webber only making five trips to the free throw line, where they were 5-for-5, while the Lady Lions were 16-of-18 from the line in the first half. That same theme carried over for the remainder of the game as Webber finished with an overall percentage of 46.8 percent compared to 34.8 percent for FMU, but the Warriors also finished 15-of-18 from the free throw line compared to a mark of 30-of-35 for the Lady Lions.
After Webber trailed by eight at halftime at 46-38 after another score by Patrick, it was all FMU in the third quarter as the Lady Lions went up by 15 at 57-42 with an 11-4 run four and a half minutes in and then went up by 20 at 68-48 with two minutes left in the third quarter. In all, it was a 24-15 third quarter in advantage of FMU.
The Warriors did, however, manage to get back to within 15 (68-53) late in the third quarter after a 5-0 run and then got to within 11 (70-59) early in the fourth quarter after a 6-0 start to the period. It was an 11-2 run overall for Webber, which expanded its run to 15-5 with two free throws by
Dariah Bolden and yet another layup by Patrick to make it 73-63 with 7:42 left in the game.
Webber then attempted to keep the comeback going as four straight points by the Warriors on free throws by
Emmarrie Carmen and another score by Patrick, giving her a career-high in points with 22, made it only an-eight point game at 75-67 with under five minutes left.
A 3-pointer by the Warriors made it a nine-point margin at 79-70 with 3:12 remaining; and then Webber got to within seven twice in the final two minutes but could not get any closer.
In addition to the career-high in points by Patrick, who also had eight rebounds and six blocks, Webber's other standouts on Thursday included
LeAndra Franklin with nine points, five steals and three assists; Bolden with nine points and six rebounds;
Montrese Weller with nine points;
Paris Copeland with eight points; and Carmen with seven points and five rebounds.
Webber fell to 8-15 overall and 3-12 in The Sun Conference on the season and was eliminated from the TSC playoff chase while Florida Memorial improved to 15-11 and 8-7 and snapped a four-game losing streak. In fact, before Saturday's win, FMU had lost each of its last seven Sun Conference games after getting to off to a 7-0 start with an 87-72 win over the Warriors back on January 5.
With only three games left in its season, Webber will play its final two home games of the year starting with a 2 p.m. meeting with St. Thomas University in two days on Saturday, February 9, followed by the Warriors' Senior Night at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, against Johnson & Wales University.
