BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 18, 2019) – Day two of the Webber Christmas Shootout started with the Webber International University women's basketball team defeating the University of Northwestern Ohio 74-69 in overtime on Wednesday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Webber (6-7 overall) made four of its six field goal attempts and three of its four free throws during the overtime period while Northwestern Ohio (5-10) shot 2-of-6 overall with both makes coming from three during overtime.
After the first of those 3-pointers by the Racers led off the extra period to put the visiting team up 66-63,
Emmarrie Carmen answered with a jumper in the paint assisted by
LeAndra Franklin on Webber's next possession to make it 66-65.
On Webber's next possession after that, a layup by
Taniya Patrick assisted on by
RayGene Garner made it 67-66 and put the Warriors up for good with 3:28 left to play.
Patrick then scored twice on assists by
Paris Copeland to make it 71-66 with under a minute remaining.
All four of Webber's makes during overtime were assisted on as the Warriors dished out 23 assists for the game on 26 total made field goals. The 23 assists are now tied for the second most in a single game by the Warriors so far in 2019-20.
Then, after the Racers hit their second 3-pointer of the extra period to get back to within one score at 71-69 with 48 seconds left, Franklin added a free throw before a missed 3-pointer by Northwestern Oho was rebounded by Copeland with only 15 ticks remaining.
Carmen finished the game off with two free throws with three seconds on the clock to make the final score 74-69.
Webber had four players finish in double figures in scoring as Patrick recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She shot 7-of-12 from the field while also adding three blocks and two steals.
In addition to Patrick, the Warriors also had three other players finish with eight or more rebounds as Webber dominated the boards 55-29 and outrebounded the Racers 20-2 on offensive rebounds. The 55 rebounds were the third most for the Warriors in a single game so far this season.
Copeland matched Patrick with 17 points on three 3-pointers, was only one rebound shy of a double-double herself with nine, and had a very impressive five assists. Her points, rebounds and assist totals were all season-highs.
Carmen scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting overall and a 4-of-6 mark from the free throw line, and she was also very close to a double-double with eight rebounds, six of which were offensive boards.
The final Warrior in double figures in scoring was Franklin with 11 points on two 3-pointers. Franklin also finished with four assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Garner finished with five points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists;
Breyonna Reed tied a season-high with six rebounds and also dished five assists; and
Amaya Lasley also added four assists.
Earlier in the game, it was a very slow start for Webber as the Warriors made only three field goals, shot only 18.8 percent and scored only seven points in the first quarter and trailed by 14 points after only 10 minutes of play.
Fortunately, after a better second quarter in which the Warriors held the Racers to single digits with only nine points and trailed 30-23 at the break, Webber opened up the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 32-30 lead on a layup by Patrick only two minutes and 45 seconds into the third quarter.
A minute later, a layup by Franklin put the Warriors up 37-33 as in all, it was a 14-3 start to the third quarter for Webber. A big part of that run was five turnovers by the Racers and three steals for the Warriors, including two steals by Webber on the first two possessions of the quarter by Northwestern Ohio to help the home team get back into the game.
From there, the rest of the third quarter featured three more ties before a 3-pointer by
Dysheka Price late in the period put Webber up by only one at 45-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter, Webber led by as much as eight twice before Northwestern Ohio stormed back to take a two-point lead at 59-57 with three and a half minutes left thanks to a 12-2 Racers' run.
After a free throw by
Eletra Graham followed by back-to-back layups by Carmen made it a three-point Warrior lead at 62-59 with 2:13 left in regulation, Webber held onto the lead until the Racers forced overtime on a layup with only a few seconds remaining.
Next up, the Lady Warriors will conclude their portion of the Webber Christmas Shootout by hosting Truett-McConnell University at 4 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. It will be the third game in three days for the Warriors, who will then play one more time after Christmas Break but before the start of the New Year.
