Men’s, women’s basketball to host Webber Christmas Shootout this week

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 16, 2019) – Webber International University Athletics is gearing up for a busy week inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center as the Warriors' men's and women's basketball teams are set to host the 2019 Webber Christmas Shootout from Tuesday, December 17, through Friday, December 20, in Babson Park, Florida.

The Webber men's basketball team is currently 5-7 in 2019-20 with three wins in its last four regular-season games.

On Saturday, November 23, the Warriors earned their first Sun Conference win of the season with a hard-earned 79-72 road victory at St. Thomas University; and then nearly two weeks later on Thursday, December 5, Webber earned a huge 83-76 upset victory over nationally-recognized Southeastern University again on a road. Then, following a tough 76-73 three-point loss at home against No. 13 Ave Maria University on Saturday, December 7, the Warriors rebounded last week with a 94-82 win in nonconference action over Southeastern Baptist College on Thursday, December 12, in Laurel, Mississippi.

The leading scorer for the Warriors so far is junior Tommie Luke, who is currently averaging 19.9 points per game and is ranked 33rd in NAIA Division-II in points per game. Senior Ariel Watson is next with an average of 14.8 points per game, followed by junior Corey Corbin at 14.1 points per game. Corbin also leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per game while Luke leads in assists with 2.5 per contest.

As a team, Webber men's basketball is ranked ninth in NAIA Division-II in offensive rebounds per game (14.1), is 14th in total rebounds per game (43.5), and is 15th In steals per game (9.4).

The Webber women's basketball team, meanwhile, is currently 5-6 on the season after snapping a five-game losing streak its last time out with a 90-60 victory at Florida College on Friday, December 13, in Temple Terrace, Florida. It was the second 30-point victory of 2019-20 for Webber over Florida College after the Warriors won 76-46 back on November 9 in Babson Park, Florida.

Leading the way for the Lady Warriors so far is sophomore Taniya Patrick with an average of 16.4 points and nine rebounds per game. Patrick currently ranks seventh in NAIA Division-II in field goal percentage (56.9 percent) and is 15th in offensive rebounds per game (4.0). The only other Lady Warrior currently averaging double digits in scoring is junior LeAndra Franklin at 10.1 points per game. Franklin also leads the team and is 12th in the country with 3.2 steals per contest and is 27th with her 84.4 free throw percentage. Additionally, senior Breyonna Reed is first on the team and 49th in the country in assists per game at 3.6.

The Lady Warriors are ranked 20th in NAIA Division-II in rebounds per game (43.8), are 24th in defensive rebounds per game (29.2) and are 26th in offensive rebounds per game (14.6)
