TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (December 13, 2019) – The Webber International University women's basketball team saw sophomore
Taniya Patrick score 18 points in the first half and start the game by making each of her first six shots and first four free throws of the game as the Warriors ultimately defeated Florida College 90-60 on the road on Friday night.
It was the second 30-point victory of 2019-20 for Webber over Florida College after the Warriors won 76-46 back on November 9 in Babson Park, Florida.
It was also the end of a five-game losing skid for Webber as the Warriors shot 50 percent from the field (30-60) and avoided double-digit turnovers (9) for the first time all year.
In that first contest between the two teams back in November, Webber led by as much as 16 points in the first quarter, but this time around, the Warriors only scored 18 points in the entire opening 10 minutes to lead 18-17 after one. The one-point advantage came thanks to a free throw by
Emmarrie Carmen with 13 seconds left in the frame.
Then, after the Falcons scored on the first possession of the second quarter to jump ahead 19-18, the Warriors went right back ahead by two on their first possession of the period after an and-one by Patrick to make it a 21-19 Webber advantage.
That was the start of a 9-0 Warrior run that saw Webber take its largest lead of the first half at 27-19 after back-to-back scores by
Paris Copeland and a fast break layup by Carmen with the assist to Copeland.
However, after Florida College came back to tie it at 29-29 following a 10-2 Falcon run, Patrick took over the rest of the first half by scoring each of Webber's final seven points before halftime.
At one point, Patrick went on a 5-0 run all by herself to put the Warriors ahead 34-29 before finishing the half on a 7-2 run by herself to make it a 36-31 halftime advantage for Webber.
In all for the first half, Patrick finished with 18 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the field and a 6-for-8 mark from the free throw line after originally making each of her first four foul shots. She also already had seven rebounds to that point.
In the third quarter, Webber went ahead by 10 for the first time in the game after a layup by
Breyonna Reed made it 44-34 with 7:48 on the clock; and then with 7:23 left in the quarter, an and-one on a circus shot by
LeAndra Franklin made it a 13-point game at 47-34.
The Warriors' largest lead of the third quarter came less than a minute later with a 14-point lead at 48-34 on a free throw by
RayGene Garner with 6:41 left in the frame.
Webber then took a 57-44 lead into the fourth quarter before starting the final 10 minutes on an 8-2 run to take a 19-point lead at 65-46 on two more free throws by Garner with just over seven minutes left.
The flood gates then opened up scoring wise as the Warriors went ahead by 24 at 80-56 with 3:16 left to play following a 3-pointer by
Selena Rodriguez and a strong and-one by
Thalia Jackson.
Webber then went up by 27 at 83-56 following a 3-pointer by
Atuanya Radway with less than three minutes remaining, went up 29 at 87-58 on two free throws by
Kiajah Smith with 1:33 left, and then won it by 30 on a layup by Radway with only 16.9 ticks left.
In all, it was a big 33-point final quarter for the Warriors.
After Patrick had 21 points and eight rebounds during the first meeting between Webber and Florida College this year, she finished with 26 points and nine rebounds this time. She was a very impressive 9-for-11 from the field and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe to finish with what was also her second highest scoring output of the season so far.
Garner scored a season-high 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting,
Amaya Lasley had eight points on 6-for-6 shooting from the free throw line, and Franklin had seven points to go along with a game-high five assists.
Both the Warriors and the Falcons now hold identical 5-6 overall records on the season.
