BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 21, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team had a chance to tie the game with 1.2 seconds left, but a miss on the second free throw attempt sent the Warriors to a crushing 89-88 defeat at home against Florida Memorial University.
After a make on the first free throw attempt to draw within one point, Webber followed the miss needing a tip-in from the baseline with only 0.2 seconds on the clock, and unfortunately, the effort fell short.
It was a back-and-forth game that featured eight ties and nine lead changes.
With the game tied at 77-77 with exactly four minutes left following a 3-pointer by the Lions' Jordan Collins, Collins' hit a second 3-pointer to give FMU the lead at 80-77 with 3:35 left to play.
Webber then tied it again at 82-82 with 1:53 remaining on a 3-pointer by
Kevin Grace, and then after another three on the Lions' next possession,
Tommie Luke hit a big 3-pointer of his own to make it 85-85 with 1:10 left.
From there, FMU's Omar Outar scored his seventh point in a row on a jumper, but then
Chetachukwu Oliver scored a layup to yet again tie it for the Warriors at 87-87 with 33 seconds on the clock.
Unfortunately, FMU's Freedy Reeves Jr. scored a tough layup with only five seconds left to give the Lions the 89-87 advantage.
With only the five ticks remaining, Luke went the distance of the court and went straight to the basket to draw the foul with only 1.2 seconds left and give himself an opportunity to tie the game.
Jaylon Myles finished with a career-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting overall and a 4-of-6 mark from 3-point range.
Ariel Watson was the other Warrior with four 3-pointers in the game as he finished with a career-high in points as well with 18 on 4-for-8 shooting from three and a 4-for-4 mark from the free throw line.
Luke finished with 14 points in the end and was 3-for-4 from the foul line, and Oliver recorded his second double-double of the season as a senior with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The fifth and final Warrior to reach double-digits in points was Grace with 10 points on a perfect 3-for-3 night both from the field and from three.
Earlier in the game in the first half, Webber led by a much as 13 three times within the first 13 minutes of play.
Despite the Warriors shooting 53.1 percent (17-32) from the field and 58.3 percent (7-12) from three in the second half, FMU was even better at 62.1 percent (18-29) overall and 72.7 percent (8-11) from three.
For the game, Webber shot 48.5 percent (32-66) overall and 50 percent (13-26) from three, but again the Lions were a little bit better, finishing at 54.1 percent (33-61) overall and 52.2 percent (12-23) from three.
The Warriors were also very strong from three free throw line overall, shooting 3-for-3 in the first half and 8-for-10 in the second, but it was the miss at the very end that made the biggest difference.
With the loss, the Warriors fell to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in The Sun Conference while with the win, FMU improved to 2-4 and 1-1.
Webber will now have to hit the road still searching for its first TSC win of the season. The Warriors will take on a St. Thomas University team that has only played three games so far in its season. Tipoff will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, in Miami Gardens, Florida.
