BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 2, 2019) – The Webber International University men's soccer team put up a good showing during Senior Day against the No. 14-ranked team in the NAIA, St. Thomas University, but in the end, it was a penalty kick midway through the first half by the Bobcats that cost the Warriors en route to a 1-0 loss for the home team.
It addition to it being Senior Day for
Chris Lyon,
Orian Burzic,
Ivan Bonanken,
Quam Salami,
Daichi Arahara,
Damian Debrot and
Bryan Mejia, it was also the 2019 season finale for a Warriors' men's soccer team that finished the year 9-7 overall and 3-6 in The Sun Conference. It was the most overall wins in a single season for Webber since 2013, and was also the most conference wins in a season for the Warriors since 2015.

Neil Cockburn spoke following the match, "I am very proud of the seniors; they fought to the very last second. Just as they have all season, they have built a great team chemistry within the boys that I feel will last a life time. I am very proud to be their coach."
STU came out firing with seven shots in the first 21:30 of the match before Webber got its first shot of the match in the 24th minute when an attempt by
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni was saved by the Bobcats' goalkeeper Michael Marx.
Then, after a shot wide by
David Negrin Ruiz in the 26th minute, STU drew a penalty in the box in the 29th minute to set up the penalty try by Max Franke. Despite three saves by Webber's goalkeeper
Fabricio Verdun, already to that point, the penalty kick was good to make it 1-0.
Each team would have only one more shot attempt for the rest of the first half as Verdun made his fourth save of the half in the 40th minute before Fernandez Sassoni shot wide in the 43rd.
In the second half, Verdun made four more saves while the Warriors' offense fired twice as many shots as it did in the first half but unfortunately just could not get one past the goalkeeper.
Salami had a shot saved in the 51st minute, and then in the 52nd minute, Fernandez Sassoni saw his third shot of the match blocked just before Mejia's shot off the rebound was saved.
Less than a minute later in the 53rd minute, Lyon had a header that was again saved by Marx.
Webber's final two shot attempts came in the 77th minute when Fernandez Sassoni's fourth shot attempt went wide and then in the 89th minute when
Rodrigo Flores Iraheta had a shot that ended in the fifth save of the match by Marx.
Verdun meanwhile, finished with eight saves for his second straight match with at least eight stops this week.
As far as Webber's 2019 Senior Class goes, Lyon and Burzic both scored their first-career goals this season while Mejia had his first two career assists. Salami had one goal and two assists during his lone year as a Warrior, Bonanken had three assists on the year, and Arahara finished with two assists during his senior season and had one goal and five assists for his career.
