WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (October 26, 2019) – The Webber International University men's soccer team led 1-0 at halftime, but unfortunately the Warriors let up six second-half goals as the Warriors were bested 6-1 by nationally-recognized Keiser University during the Seahawks' Senior Day.
The first goal of the match came courtesy of junior
David Negrin Ruiz in the 25th minute.
It was the first shot of the match for Webber and was Negrin Ruiz's team-best eighth goal of the season as he took the through ball from
Rodrigo Flores Iraheta and chipped it over the keeper.
Despite the lead, the Warriors were outshot 10-2 in the first half, and then it got even worse in the second half as Webber was outshot 26-3 over the final 45 minutes and was held to without a corner kick for the match.
Felipe Freiria made seven saves in the goal for the Warriors' defense while the offense saw two shots apiece from Negrin Ruiz and
Quam Salami and another shot from
Matheus Gomes.
Both of Salami's attempts on the day were on target as he fired a shot that was saved in the 41st minute and had another shot saved in the 56th minute, only moments after the match-tying goal by the Seahawks.
Then, only two minutes after Salami's final attempt, Keiser took the 2-1 lead and was off to the races offensively, firing 18 more shots and scoring four times over the final 30 minutes of action.
With only two matches left, Webber is now 8-6 on the season overall and is 2-5 in The Sun Conference as the Warriors' chances to reach the 10-win mark in a season for the first time since 2006 is in jeopardy. Keiser, which has been receiving votes in the 2019 Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll all season long, improved to 8-5 and 5-2.
Webber's final two matches of the 2019 campaign will come at home as the Warriors host Florida Memorial University at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30, before Webber holds its 2019 Senior Day at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 2 against No. 13 St. Thomas University.
