LAKE WALES, Fla. (October 12, 2019) – For the first time in three seasons, the Webber International University men's soccer team secured the Crooked Lake Cup and brought the trophy back home to Babson Park, Florida, as the Warriors were victorious over rival Warner University, 3-0, on Saturday night at Royals Field.
Webber's Head Men's Soccer Coach
Neil Cockburn had this to say after the win, "To win the cup for the first time since 2016, everything fell into place tonight. If the boys work as hard as they did tonight, we won't lose another match all season. I couldn't be prouder of their collective and individual efforts tonight."
Webber's dynamic duo of
David Negrin Ruiz and
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni made their presence felt straight from the get go as both players scored within the first six minutes of the contest.
After a mistake on an illegal touch by the Warner goalkeeper, Negrin Ruiz netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season less than two minutes in on a free kick.
Only four minutes later, Negrin Ruiz then assisted on the goal by Fernandez Sassoni, his second of the year.
Late in the second half, Negrin Ruiz again made his mark with a goal in the 87th minute, assisted by Fernandez Sassoni, to give him now six goals and four assists on the season, good for a team-best 16 points.
In goal,
Felipe Freiria earned the fourth shutout of his freshman campaign and made seven very important saves to improve his record to 7-4.
For Webber, the win snaps a two-match losing streak both overall and in The Sun Conference, rising the Warriors' record to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the TSC. Warner, meanwhile, fell to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the TSC to match the Warriors' conference record.
With the season sweep over Warner now under its belt, the Warriors' men's soccer team will now look to use its current momentum to earn another season sweep over a fellow TSC opponent this year as the Warriors square off against Ave Maria University for another 7 p.m. night match on Wednesday, October 16, in Ave Maria, Florida. The first meeting between the Warriors and the Gyrenes this season back on September 21 resulted in a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory for Webber in Babson Park, Florida.
