BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 5, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team earned an important Sun Conference victory and also earned what was its fourth straight win at home, defeating Florida Memorial University 81-73 on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
The Warriors, playing without The Sun Conference's leading scorer in
Tommie Luke, had five players score in double figures as senior
Simon Fransis picked up the majority of the scoring slack, scoring a career-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting overall and a 4-of-7 mark from 3-point range.
Austin Evans recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Fransis also added seven rebounds, and was one of four other Warriors besides Evans who approached double-double territory as
Nicholas Blocker had 13 points and seven rebounds (season-high in both categories),
Malik Morrow had 11 points and eight rebounds, and
Kevin Grace had 10 points and tied a career-best with nine boards.
After Webber (10-8 overall, 2-5 TSC) led for nearly 17 and a half minutes in the first half and led by 11 at the intermission, the Warriors never let Florida Memorial (3-15, 1-6) get any closer than within nine points in the second half until the final few seconds when a score by FMU made it an eight-point final score.
Webber led by as much as 20 only four and a half minutes before that on a layup by
Herman Robinson that made it 76-56.
A big part of the Warriors' advantage in the first half came on the boards as Webber outrebounded FMU 34-15 overall and 12-5 on the offensive glass, leading to a 14-2 differential in second chance points during the opening 20 minutes. Webber also shot 12-of-17 from the free throw line in the first half compared to only a 1-of-2 mark for FMU.
In all, the Warriors won the rebounding battle by 22 (57-35) with their most boards in a single game so far this season, and Webber also finished 21-of-29 from the charity stripe (72.4 percent) while the Lions were just over 50 percent from the line (8-15).
Head Coach
Allen Corbin said, "I am extremely proud of our guy's effort tonight on the defensive end. It was the best team effort that we have had in a long time. I'm excited to get back on the court next week. As always, my staff did an incredible job in preparation this week."
Webber will now take on Keiser University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, looking to start a new winning streak after seeing their five-game win streak snapped last Thursday at St. Thomas University. It will be an important matchup as the Seahawks began the weekend one game up on the Warriors in the TSC standings.
