BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 31, 2019) – The Warriors shot 50 percent from the field and led by 11 after only one quarter of action, but in the end, the Webber International University women's basketball team could not hold on in the second half and fell to the College of Costal Georgia by a score of 67-54.
Freshman
Taniya Patrick was only one block shy of her first career triple-double as she scored 11 points, brought in 12 rebounds and swatted nine shots. Patrick has recorded at least eight points, 12 boards and eight blocks in each of her last two games.
Sophomore
LeAndra Franklin recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 steals.
Junior
Dysheka Price also had one of her best games of the season so far, scoring a career-best 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting overall with three 3-pointers. Price also added six rebounds and two blocks.
Webber (8-13 overall, 3-10 The Sun Conference) trailed 11-4 three and a half minutes into the game but quickly turned it around with a gigantic 18-0 run to lead by 11 at 22-11. In addition to going 9-of-18 from the field in the opening quarter while holding Coastal Georgia (16-8, 9-5) to 25 percent, Webber also connected on four 3-pointers to take the big lead.
A fast break layup by Franklin to start the second quarter put the Warriors up by 13 at 27-14; and then at the end of the quarter, back-to-back steals and scores by Franklin in the final 20 seconds put Webber back up by five at halftime at 39-34.
The Mariners finished the second quarter with a 70 percent shooting mark overall and a 2-for-2 mark from three while Webber was held to 35.3 percent.
In the third quarter, Coastal Georgia kicked off the second half with a 9-1 run to go ahead by three at 43-40. In all, it was an extremely low scoring third quarter as the Mariners outscored the Warriors 13-4 and held Webber to only 10 percent shooting in the period to lead by four (47-43).
In the fourth and final quarter, Price started the scoring by connecting on a 3-pointer to get Webber to within one (47-46) before a 12-1 run by Coastal Georgia made it 59-47 with only three minutes left.
Webber's last gasp then came via a jumper by Patrick and a layup by
Dariah Bolden to get within eight at 59-51 with two and a half minutes left before Coastal Georgia went on an 8-0 run to all but close it out.
In addition to getting to .500 on the road during the season at 5-5, Coastal Georgia also earned the season sweep against the Warriors after knocking off Webber by 22, 77-55, back on December 8, 2018.
Webber will now set its sights on two road games as the Warriors travel north to Thomasville, Georgia, to play Thomas University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, before traveling south to Miami Gardens, Florida, to battle Florida Memorial University at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 7.
