LAKE WALES, Fla. (January 26, 2019) – The No. 18 Webber International University baseball team continued its dominating performance from the night before with a 17-7 win over Warner University on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Lake Wales, Florida.
The Warriors used three big innings to put a 17-spot on the Royals, including a huge eight-run seventh inning.
Webber started off the scoring in the second inning with a two-RBI single to left from
Quirino Esquivel, a sacrifice fly to right by
Cristian Rivera, and an RBI double by
Carlo Mancillas to cap off the four-run inning.
The Royals, however, responded with a four-run inning of their own in the bottom of the third, and then Warner would take the lead in the fourth inning with a bases loaded walk to make the score 5-4.
The Warriors then responded in the fifth inning with a solo home run from
Willie Carter, his second home run in two days, to tie the game at five runs apiece.
From there, Webber would take over with its bats with an eight-run seventh inning and a four-run ninth.
The seventh-inning rally was sparked by a Begg double down the right field line to score Mancillas.
Nolan Soliveres followed up Begg's double with a double himself to right center field bringing in Begg and Carter.
Later in the seventh inning, after a passed ball scored
Rougie Odor, Rivera launched his first home run of the season with a three-run blast. Lastly, Carter added an RBI single to score
Garrett Martin to put the Warriors up 13-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Webber's offense overall was led by Carter (2-3, two RBI's, three runs, and three walks), Begg (2-5, two RBI's, and three runs), Soliveres (2-5 with four RBI's), Rivera (1-3 with four RBI's, two walks, and one run), and Balentien (2-4, two runs, two walks, and an RBI).
The Warriors' pitching was a combined effort from
Doug Pearl,
Ricardo Garcia,
Gerig Blackman (1-0),
Rey Rodriguez and
John Shutrump.
Head Coach
Brad Niethammer said, "Our pitching was a little sloppy today, but we took advantage of our opportunities to put plenty of runs up to secure the win."
In the end, Webber finished with more runs than hits for the second game in a row while Warner committed four more errors, giving the Royals 10 errors through their first two games of the year.
Webber continues nonconference action against another TSC opponent, No. 6 St. Thomas University, back in Babson Park, Florida, with a 6 p.m. meeting on Friday, February 1, followed by a 1 p.m. game time on Saturday, February 2.
