Warriors put it on late to top Florida National

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 6, 2018) – The Webber International University women's soccer team scored two late goals in a less than two-minute span to defeat Florida National University, 2-0, in its 2018 home opener on a wet and rainy day at Warrior Field.

Webber's first goal came in the 77th minute as sophomore Leah Borders, making her Warrior debut, scored what would go on to be the winning goal with a left-footed strike on her fourth attempt of the match. Moments later in the 79th minute, junior Megan Warner converted on her third goal in as many matches to kick off her Webber career.

Senior Victoria Garcia recorded the assist on the goal by Borders; and freshman Mattea Ntacyo earned the helper on the goal by Warner with a header pass.

It was the first win at home and second overall for the Warriors under their new Head Coach, Brian Fallon.

"It certainly was a hard fought game with Florida National bringing their best effort to the field; however, our style of play I believe wore them down and ultimately, it was just a matter of time before we got two in the goal," said Fallon. "I really can only say how much I respect these young ladies for working so hard this last week to improve and certainly today, I think I saw the fruits of their labor's as I'm sure they did as well. Once again I thank my entire staff for all their efforts to help our players recover after a rough last week to be ready to play a very solid game today."

After an hour and 15 minute lighting delay 25 minutes into the match with the Warriors being outshot 2-1 to that point, Webber came out of the lengthy break outshooting FNU 4-1 throughout the rest of the first half and 7-1 13 minutes into the second period.

Two of those early second half shots by the Warriors came from Borders and Warner, caroming off the post.

The Warriors continued to mount the pressure as Sarah Thigpen fired her fourth attempt of the match for an FNU save in the 64th minute, Borders shot high in the 70th minute, and then in the 73rd minute, Warner and Emilie Velez launched back-to-back shots in the box that were blocked. Less than four minutes later, Webber would be on the board.

In all, Webber outshot FNU 13-5 in the second half and 18-8 overall as seven Warriors fired at least one shot attempt. Warner led the way with five total attempts, two on goal, while Thigpen and Borders both had four shots with Thigpen leading both teams with three shots on goal. Senior Luiza Oliveira had two shots.

Next week, the Warriors will have their work cut out for them with three road matches at NCAA Division-II Rollins College on Wednesday, September 12, at NCAA D-I University of North Florida on Thursday, September 13, and at NJCAA Daytona State College on Saturday, September 15.
