BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 30, 2018) – Despite a 3-0 deficit at halftime, the Webber International University women's soccer team refused to quit and fought back to within one goal against Johnson & Wales University, falling to the Wildcats 3-2 on Sunday afternoon on Warrior Field.
After entering the match with no goals during its last two matches, Webber (3-6 overall, 1-3 The Sun Conference) put an end to that stretch with an electrifying six-minute span starting in the 51st minute on Sunday.
It started with a goal by
Megan Warner off a beautiful cross from
Luiza Oliveira. Then, in the 56th minute, Oliveira charged the Wildcat box and drew a foul, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for herself in which she converted to make the score 3-2 and give the Warriors new life.
It was the fifth goal of the season for Warner, who now has 12 points to her credit in her first year as a Warrior. For Oliveira, a senior from Rio de Janiero, Brazil, the three points on Sunday gave her 10 points within the last week and a half.
With all of the momentum on the side of the Warriors on Sunday, Webber came up just shy on multiple shot attempts at the goal.
Leah Borders would go on to miss just wide in the 68th minute, was wide again in the 71st minute, was high in the 76th minute, and then had her final shot attempt, a high bouncing header, saved in the 88th minute.
Emilie Velez missed high in the 72nd minute and then fired a shot that was saved in the 82nd minute.
In all, Borders would finish with six shot attempts, two on goal, while Warner added four shots, three of which were on goal.
Johnson & Wales (6-3, 3-1), which won its third straight conference match, entered the day ranking 40th in the NAIA with three goals per game.
Sunday's match also marked the ninth all-time meeting between Webber and Johnson & Wales with the Warriors now holding a 5-3-1 edge in the series history.
Next up, Webber will play on the road at Ave Maria University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, in some more TSC action. Then, on Wednesday, October 10, the Warriors will continue on the road to play St. Leo University in their final nonconference regular-season match of 2018.
