Football remains undefeated with 27-9 win over Union

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (September 22, 2018) – Despite an overall sloppy performance, the Webber International University football team scored 27 unanswered points to defeat Union College 27-9 on a wet and rainy Saturday afternoon on the turf at Williamson Stadium in Barbourville, Kentucky.

It was the second win of the season in the state of Kentucky for Webber, which remained unbeaten in 2018 with a record of 4-0. It was also the final non-divisional game for both teams at Union fell to 1-3 in what was their first home game in 30 days.

The Warrior offense was plagued in the first half by untimely penalties and two interceptions. There were 70 yards worth of penalties in the first half and 125 for the game against the Warriors.

Webber was trailing 9-0 before it scored 10 unanswered points late in the first half to lead 10-9 at the intermission. The points came on a three-yard touchdown pass from Brady Ooten to Timothy Miller with 3:39 on the clock and a 23-yard field goal by Marcus Mannerstedt with less than a minute left in the half.

Mannerstedt, the reigning Sun Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, then came out with a 40-yard field goal with 2:21 left in the third quarter to make it 13-9 Warriors.

The Webber defense proceeded to make its stand in the fourth quarter as the Warriors pulled away. Early on in the frame with Union driving, Tajh Milliken came up with an interception to give the Warriors the ball back with just over 10 minutes left to play.

Then, with 5:22 left, UC turned the ball over on downs at Webber's own 40-yard line, and the Webber offense responded with a 53-yard touchdown rush by Davonte Williams two plays later to give the Warriors a 20-9 advantage with 4:38 remaining.

On the Bulldogs next possession with time running out on their chances of coming back, UC was facing 4th-and-23 deep in its own territory. Webber's defense did what it does best and iced the game with a 34-yard interception returned to the house by James Mallory.

Tyson Burch led the resilient Webber defense with 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack while Travonte Haynie added eight tackles with one tackle for loss and one sack as well. Brandon Bell, Keith Neal, Aaron Givens, Amari Way and Dequan Harvin all added five tackles in a group effort to shut down UC after a rough start.

Leading the Webber offense were two freshmen as Williams finished with 19 rushes for a career-high 142 yards while Ooten finished with 63 yards on the ground on nine attempts and added 97 passing yards on 7-of-13 passing. Miller added four catches for 69 yards, including a long catch of 44 yards, to go along with his score.

This was the third-ever meeting between Webber and Union with the Warriors now winning twice on Union's home field at the Bulldogs winning once in Florida.

This was the final game for the Warriors before they begin Mid-South Conference Sun Division play next weekend in a huge matchup against No. 18 Southeastern University. The Warriors and the Fire will do battle at Webber's new home field in Winter Haven, Florida, Denison Stadium, on Saturday, September 29. Kickoff between the Polk County rivals is set for 7:30 p.m. under the lights.
