MONTGOMERY, Ala. (May 16, 2018) – For the second time in three days, the second-seeded Webber international University baseball team fell to third-seeded Indiana Tech in extra innings, this time by a score of 2-1 in 11 innings and knocking the Warriors out of the 2018 NAIA National Championship Opening Round – Montgomery Bracket.
Webber's lone run in the contest game on a solo home run to left field by
Chris Medina in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one run apiece. It was Medina's 11th home run of his lone season as a Warrior, tying him for the team lead.
On the mound,
Brady Mintell put together a strong starting performance, allowing six hits in 6.1 innings of work with only one run allowed, a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning.
In the seventh inning, Mintell gave way to
John Shutrump who entered in a tough spot, facing a situation with runners on first and second with only one out. Shutrump proceeded to get out of the inning with a fly out to
Langston Provitt in center field as the runner at second base was caught in a rundown between second and third before being tagged out by
Quirino Esquivel.
Despite two hit by pitches over the next two innings, Shutrump finished with 3.2 solid innings of no-hit and no-walk baseball to keep the Warriors' hopes alive, but an hour and 20 minute weather delay in the middle of the 11th inning signaled the end of Shutrump's day.
After the Warriors came up empty in the top half of the 11th as
Manny Rodriguez was tagged out by the left fielder between second and third base trying to take two bases on a single to left by Medina, Indiana Tech loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half on a single to center followed by back-to-back walks by
Jesse Coleman.
With the Warriors' season on the line,
Juan Terron entered to pitch and threw three straight balls before battling back to record a fly out to Rodriguez in shallow right field.
However, with a 1-1 count, Indiana Tech's Taylor Nychyk responded with a walk off hit over everybody in right center field to stun the Warriors.
Medina finished 3-for-5 and Coleman was 2-for-4 in their final collegiate games while Webber's only other hit came off the bat of Provitt.
Webber finished its season with an overall record of 37-24 after winning its first ever Sun Conference Tournament Championship and qualifying for its second consecutive trip to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
