BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 27, 2018) – The Warriors led 3-0 early on thanks to three runs batted in by senior
Jesse Coleman, but in the end, the Webber International University baseball team fell to NCAA Division-II Eckerd College for the second time in three days, this time by a final score of 6-4 on Webber's Senior Night on the Heart of Florida Field.
It was the final home game for 12 seniors who were honored before first pitch:
Chris Medina,
Mark Martinez,
Alex Rodriguez, Coleman,
Manny Rodriguez,
Juan Terron,
Napo Ballestero,
Brett Kaminski,
Brady Mintell,
Max Boling,
Braden Peterson and
Robert Lyons.
Friday's contest, Webber's final regular-season game of 2018, was a close one throughout as the Warriors got off to a solid start, using a two-run home run to center field by Coleman in the first inning and a sacrifice fly again by Coleman, this time to right field in the third inning that nearly went yard, to take an early 3-0 advantage.
The home run was Coleman's fifth of the season as a senior.
The Warriors' early lead was also backed by strong pitching performances on the mound as starter
Zak Spivy cruised through five innings allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits, and then fellow-junior
Doug Pearl finished the next two frames allowing just one unearned run of his own.
Unfortunately, the Warriors were stung by back-to-back walks to start the top of the eighth inning as the Tritons scored three times with one out in the frame, bringing in Coleman to pitch, who left the bases loaded with back-to-back swinging strikeouts.
In the bottom of the eighth for Webber, Kaminski and
Quirino Esquivell started off with back-to-back singles but would go no further; and then in the ninth inning, the Warriors threatened to tie it up or take the lead.
With one out in the ninth,
Marcus Begg and Coleman hit back-to-back singles to left and then
Langston Provitt walked to load the bases.
Kaminski followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice to center field where the runner was cut down at second base on an in-between pop fly, and from there the Warriors had a chance to win the game with a home run or tie it with a hit to the gap and the speedy
Garrett Martin at first base, but the comeback was not in the cards for the home team
Among the seniors, Coleman finished 2-for-3 with three RBI's, a run and a walk; Kaminski finished with two hits and an RBI; M. Rodriguez finished with a hit, a run and a walk; Medina drew three walks in his first three at bats and scored a run; catchers Martinez and Ballestero split time behind the plate and both had a hit; A. Rodriguez added a walk and Lyons also added a run.
Coleman was also strong on the mound in relief, coming out of right field to pitch 1.1 innings giving up no runs on one hit and one walk before returning back to right field to make the final out of the top of the ninth on a fly out. Recording that final out in the top of the final inning was another senior for the Warriors, Peterson.
Webber finishes the regular season 31-21 overall, and also finishes up still receiving votes in the fourth installment of the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll as the team with the fifth most votes of those not in the top 25. Eckerd, meanwhile, used the two wins over Webber on Wednesday and Friday to improve to one game above .500 on the season at 22-21.
Webber will now set its sights on the 2018 Sun Conference Tournament, which begins one week from Friday at the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida. The action begins on Friday, May 4, with the Warriors needing to put together a deep run to secure a spot in the NAIA National Championship for the second straight season.
