HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (April 20, 2018) – The Webber International University baseball team swept Sun Conference opponent the University of South Carolina Beaufort in a doubleheader 6-0 and 7-3 on Friday afternoon at the Richard Gray Sports Complex.
In the final Sun Conference series of the year for the Warriors, staring pitcher
Zak Spivy (5-6) pitched a complete game shutout in game one. He only gave up five hits with three walks and six strikeouts over the nine innings.
Offensively in game one for Webber,
Chris Medina went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Manny Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two RBI's.
Quirino Esquivel added one RBI, one run and two walks.
Garrett Martin also scored twice with four stolen bases.
The Warriors started the scoring off in game one with two runs in the sixth inning on a single down the left field line by
Alex Rodriguez and another hit to left by Esquivel to bring in Medina and
Marcus Begg, respectively.
In the seventh inning, M. Rodriguez singled to right to score Martin and make it 3-0, and then in the eighth inning, Webber doubled up the score as Martin scored again on a hit by pitch by M. Rodriguez, his second RBI in as many innings, and then Medina capped of the scoring with a two-run hit plating Esquivel and
Luis Esteban.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Warriors were led by good pitching by
Juan Terron (7-2) who pitched 7.2 strong innings allowing three runs on nine hits, four walks and five strikeouts.
Brady Mintell came in to help Terron out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth, and then closed the game out in the ninth.
Langston Provitt had a big game for Webber offensively; batting 3-for-4 with four RBI's including a three run homer in the fourth inning to put the Warriors up 5-2. Provitt also scored twice and added a triple and a stolen base.
Webber's other RBI's in game two came off the bats of Medina,
Cristian Rivera and A. Rodriguez.
Additionally,
Napo Ballestero and Esquivel both finished with two hits while Ballestero had both a double and a triple.
The win in game two gave Webber its 30th victory of the year, which makes it the sixth season in a row that the Warriors have reached the 30-win mark.
The Warriors improved their record to 30-19 overall and 12-11 in TSC as USCB dropped to 20-27 and 5-16.
Webber will finish up its series with USCB on Saturday, April 21, at 12 p.m. A win in that one would tie the Warriors for third place in the TSC standings with Florida Memorial University.
