Baseball falls to No. 5 Saint Thomas

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 13, 2018) – The Webber International baseball team fell to No. 5 Saint Thomas University 15-4 on Friday evening in Sun Conference action at the Heart of Florida Field.

Webber (27-17, 10-9 The Sun Conference) had a rough start to the series as it ran into a hot Saint Thomas (40-4, 18-1) team which is now on a season-best 14-game winning streak.

The Warriors scored four late runs to avoid the run rule, the first of which came in the fifth inning from an RBI single by Cristian Rivera up the middle scoring Quirino Esquivel, who led off the inning with a walk.

Chris Medina followed up the next inning with a solo home run to left field making the score 11-2.

Then in the ninth inning, Mark Martinez led off with a hit through the right side, and then Luis Esteban hit an RBI double to left center scoring Napo Ballestero all the way from first base. Brett Kaminski joined the action on the next at bat with an RBI single to right to score Esteban.

Early on, the Warrior defense made some highlight plays as second baseman Esquivel recorded the second out of the game with a diving stop and a strong throw from one knee.

In the top of the second, left fielder Jesse Coleman made an exceptional diving catch running in, and then in the third inning, center fielder Langston Provitt made an impressive catch of his own with a full sprint catch at the wall to save runs.

Medina finished 3-for-4 overall and added a walk to reach base four times in total, Kaminki finished 2-for-2 and Martinez was 2-for-4.

Webber will finish up its series with Saint Thomas with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14, starting at 12 p.m.
