BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 5, 2018) – The No. 25 Webber International University baseball team won for the fourth time in three days and earned its seventh straight victory, defeating No. 9 Bellevue University 6-5 on Monday night on the Heart of Florida Field.
With the win, Webber improved to 11-9 overall on the season and notched its fourth win over a fellow nationally ranked team. Bellevue, meanwhile, fell to 3-8 with what was its fifth straight loss and fourth defeat to a top-25 team in the country in three days.
The first half of the game was all Warriors as
Garrett Martin yet again led off a game with a hit, getting on via an infield single, advancing to second on a wild pitch and eventually scoring on a passed ball.
Martin, who is batting .417 so far as a junior, has led off four of Webber's last six games with a knock.
Webber answered a run by Bellevue in the top of the third inning with two runs of its own in the bottom half, taking advantage of more miscues by the Bruins (an error by the third baseman, another wild pitch and another passed ball) to score two more unearned runs.
In the fourth inning, the Warriors drew three consecutive walks, the first two of which came on only eight pitches and the first of which chased Bellevue's starting pitcher. In all, two Bruins' pitchers exited in the fourth inning without getting an out as Webber put up three more runs to open its lead up to 6-1.
Chris Medina and
Tanner Williams both continued their hot streaks at the plate and earned runs batted in during Webber's three-run sixth inning. Medina would go on to finish 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI's, a walk, a stolen base and a hit by pitch.
Webber's big third and fourth innings came courtesy of five walks, three hits, two errors and a hit batter over the two frames.
That was, however, all of the hitting the Warriors would get in the game as they finished with six runs on four hits and had to rely on timely pitching by starter
Zak Spivy and solid work out of the bullpen by
Jesse Coleman to secure the victory.
As it turned out, the Warriors needed every one of those six runs as after a great first five innings by Spivy, the Warriors needed two strikeouts and a great diving catch in center field by Martin to help Spivy get out of a tough sixth inning with the lead still intact at 6-4.
Coleman entered with one out in the seventh inning and earned two strikeouts to strand both the tying and go-ahead runs for the Bruins on base. Coleman then got into a groove, tossing a 1-2-3 eighth inning and finishing off the game in the ninth for his second save of the season as a senior and third of his career.
Spivy finished with 6.1 innings of work, allowing nine hits, five runs in total and three earned runs while walking four and striking out six. It may not have been his best stuff, but it was enough to defeat the No. 9 team in the NAIA and improve his record on the mound to 2-3.
Coleman closed out the final 2.2 innings of the game and struck out six batters himself while only walking one and not allowing a single hit. In eight relief appearances so far, Coleman is 2-2 with a strong 1.56 earned run average, and has 19 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.
Next up, Webber will play its fifth game in four days on the Heart of Florida Field as the Warriors host Shawnee State University at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6. Webber will then host five more nonconference games over the next week and one day to finish off a big 13-game home stand.
