BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 26, 2018) – After leading midway through game one but falling 6-4 in 10 innings, the Webber International University softball team came together in game two to defeat No. 24 Warner University 4-1 on Monday afternoon on
Nancy Nichols Field.
With the win, the Webber (14-9 overall, 6-4 TSC) earned its fourth win of the season over a nationally ranked team and earned at least a split or better in four of its first five Sun Conference series, all of which have come against teams in the top five in the TSC standings. Warner, meanwhile, fell to 22-9 overall and 5-3 in the conference, a game behind the Warriors for second place in the win column in the standings.
The Warriors' win in game two came thanks to a four-run fourth inning and solid pitching by sophomore
Raven White (6-3), who went five innings while allowing only five hits, one run and no walks.
The bottom of the fourth for Webber began with a first-pitch, leadoff home run to center field by senior
Meghan Lindell, her first of the season, to tie the game at one run apiece. Lindell's line drive shot was followed immediately by a first-pitch single up the middle by another senior,
Megan Isoba, and then the floodgates opened.
A double by freshman
Daisy Riggleman to right center scored Isoba, and then another freshman,
Samantha Rolfe, singled up the middle to score sophomore
Victoria Atkinson. In all, Webber opened its half of the fourth inning with three runs on four hits to force a pitching change.
In the circle, White settled down after allowing five hits through the first three innings to pitch back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth before giving way to
Stephanie Johnson for a two-inning save, her second save as a freshman.
Johnson, however, was not alone in her efforts to close out the Royals as the Warriors' defense made a few nice plays behind her, including a great diving stop while lunging to her right by second baseman
Alyssa Rodriguez for the final out of the top of the sixth. Then, Rodriguez again flashed the leather, making a great catch on a hard liner for the second out of the seventh.
In the first game, Webber nearly came away with a win in the eighth inning as a hard liner to the pitcher by Lindell and a fly out to the right field fence by Isoba stranded the winning run on third base.
After Warner went ahead 4-3 in the ninth with an RBI hit up the middle with two outs and while facing an 0-2 count, the Warriors answered in the bottom half with an RBI hit to deep center by Riggleman to score
Kylee Crews. However, Webber would have no answer to the Royals' two-run top of the 10th.
In all, Riggleman was 2-for-4 with two RBI's in game one while
Marisha Bullard added two RBI's on her first home run of the season in the third inning. In game two, Lindell and Rolfe were both 2-for-3 while Riggleman and Rolfe both finished with three hits on the day.
Pitching in game one for Webber was
Sabrina Hebding (6-3), who nearly tossed her seventh complete game of the season, finishing with four earned runs allowed in 9.2 innings.
"I am really proud of how the girls fought hard throughout both games today," said Head Coach
Laura Tucker. "Our hitters came out hot today and our pitching and defense was solid. We took a tough loss the first game, but we bounced back in the second and got the win. It was great to get another big conference win."
Webber will next be in action on Wednesday, April 4, at 2 p.m. for a TSC doubleheader on the road against Ave Maria University.
