CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (March 10, 2018) – The Webber International University men's volleyball team fell to Campbellsville University by a score of 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-21, 27-25) for the second time in a week. The Warriors were also swept by Morningside College (Iowa) 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-19) to finish up the Campbellsville Spring Invitational on Saturday.
Against the Tigers of CU, freshman
Justin Beecher recorded a career-high 38 assists while
Liam Gilchrist finished with 15 kills and sophomore
Steven Bartlett had a career-best nine digs. Making his first career appearances at setter this weekend, Beecher finished the tournament averaging over 26 assists per match.
Sophomore
Christian Alvarez-Rivero also had a career-high in kills with 10 while adding eight digs, and
Zachary Ayala added nine kills, five digs and four blocks.
After a rough first set that saw the Tigers go ahead by 10 at 18-8, Webber (3-11) rallied to win the second set, scoring first and never trailing while using a 5-0 run to go ahead 15-6 and withstanding a 6-0 Campbellsville (12-11) run directly afterwards to make it 15-12.
The Warriors scored each of the last five points of the second set and finished with a strong .417 attack percentage in the frame compared to a .083 percentage from CU.
In the third set, neither team led by more than two points through the first 41 rallies until the very end when the Tigers finished on a 6-0 run to turn a 21-19 deficit into a 25-21 win.
Then, with the score tied at 21-21 in the fourth set, a kill by Alvarez-Rivero started a short 3-0 run that gave the Warriors set-point at 24-21. However, Campbellsville answered with four straight points to go ahead 25-24, its first lead since 2-1 in the same set, and then after a CU service error, the Tigers claimed the victory on two blocks.
Against Morningside (8-13), Beecher dished out 22 assists while Alvarez-Rivero had nine kills and six digs. Ayala tied for the match-high with nine digs in total while Gilchrist also had seven kills and freshman
Cesar Remedios had a career-high six kills and a good .364 attack percentage.
The Warriors actually outhit the Mustangs in both the second and third sets, finishing with attack percentages of .321 and .333, respectively, compared to .100 and .281 percent from MC.
Webber will remain on the road to play two more Southeast Athletic Conference opponents, Cincinnati Christian University and Brewton-Parker College. It will be the second meeting with both teams for the Warriors as they battle the CCU Eagles at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12, in Cincinnati, Ohio, followed by the BPC Barons at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, in Mount Vernon, Georgia.
