Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors strong third quarter not enough to beat the Lions

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 8, 2018) – For the second time in four games, Ashley Perry nearly recorded a triple-double, but again it would not be enough as the Webber International University women's basketball team fell 65-50 against Florida Memorial University on Thursday evening at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

After scoring 15 points with eight rebounds and eight steals against Warner University back on January 27, Perry notched a career-high in both rebounds (16) and steals (10) against the Lions on Thursday, but was kept away from the elusive triple-double as she scored nine points. Perry also added three blocks.

Perry was already halfway to her double-double at the intermission as she collected four steals in the first quarter alone and had 10 boards and five steals at halftime, but that was the lone bright spot for Webber (9-17 overall, 3-12 The Sun Conference) in the first half as Florida Memorial (14-9, 9-6) doubled up Webber's score at 30-15.

The third quarter, however, is where Webber started to turn it around.

After Montrese Weller started the second half with a 3-pointer and hit another to make it 33-25 with 7:10 left in the third quarter. Webber then continued the comeback attempt with five straight points to make it 33-30 and cap a big 15-3 run with 4:50 left in the third.

Breyonna Reed finished the third quarter with six assists, and finished with seven total while adding eight points and three steals.

Heading into the final quarter, Webber trailed 45-38 and got back to within seven one more time as Weller scored a layup to make it 53-46 with four minutes remaining.

Weller led the Warriors in scoring with 16 points on three 3-pointers while adding a career-high four steals. Tiffany Zito added six points and six rebounds while Shayla McPhearson also scored six points while bringing in five rebounds.

The Warriors struggled mightily early on, starting the game 1-for-10 from the field and 0-for-6 from 3-point range, but the Lions weren't much better as they started the game 3-for-11 from the field.

By the end of the first quarter, Webber was only 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from the field while Florida Memorial was only 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) bunt sank two 3-pointers (2-9; 22.2 percent) to hold a slight 10-8 edge.

In the second quarter, FMU used a 10-0 run midway through the frame to outscore the Warriors 20-7. Webber's shooting percentage at that point was still under 15 percent (5-36; 13.9 percent), and the Warriors were also 0-for-9 from three and only 5-for-14 (35.7 percent) from the foul line after starting off only 2-for-8 on free throws.

With only three games remaining in the regular season, the Warriors postseason chances took a severe hit on Thursday.

Next up, Webber will play at Saint Thomas University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, and at Johnson & Wales University on Thursday, February 15, before hosting its Senior Day against Keiser University on Saturday, February 17.
