No. 25 baseball beats Gyrenes for second straight win

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 7, 2018) – For the second straight game, the No. 25 Webber International University baseball team scored more runs than it had hits, but the offensive firepower for the Warriors was more than enough as Webber defeated Ave Maria University 12-6 to earn its second straight nonconference win.

Offensively, Webber's reigning Sun Conference Baseball Player of the Week, Manny Rodriguez, was one of two Warriors with two hits as he finished with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate while adding two runs and one run batted in.

Michel Dagenais and Mark Martinez both finished with three RBI's while Chris Medina scored three runs. Like Rodriguez, Marcus Begg also scored twice, and Tyree Austin walked twice.

Webber (2-4) used a big first inning to take control as the Warriors crossed the plate six times on only two hits in the frame.

Austin led off the inning with a walk and stole two bases to set the tone, and then Rodriguez walked and stole a base. From there, Luis Esteban reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Austin, Begg hit a single to deep right field, Dagenais was hit by a pitch to bring in Rodriguez, and Medina walked to bring in Esteban.

Begg then scored on a sacrifice fly by Cristian Rivera to make it 4-1 before a double to left field by Jesse Coleman brought in Medina and Dagenais to make it 6-1.

In the third inning, Medina led off with a triple and was brought in by Martinez with two outs to make it 5-1.

Ave Maria (2-7) scored five runs in the top of the fourth to get within one run at 7-6, but from there, it was all Warriors.

After Ave's five-run inning to get back into it, Webber answered immediately in the bottom half of the fourth as Rodriguez earned the Warriors' second triple of the game, which led to a two-run hit by Dagenais down the right field line to make it 9-6 Warriors.

Webber then shut out the Gyrenes over the final five innings as John Shutrump (1-0) pitched a scoreless fifth and was followed by Doug Pearl, Braden Peterson, Coleman and Donovan Bertoncini with an inning each.

In all, the two teams combined for nine stolen bases, five of which came from the Warriors.

Webber's first Sun Conference game of 2018 will come this weekend as the Warriors host No. 4 Southeastern University in a three-game series. The Warriors and the Fire will play at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 9, and then start a doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 10.
