Softball sweeps No. 16 Southeastern in TSC opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 24, 2018) – The Webber International University softball team started conference play on a high note as the Warriors traveled to No. 16-ranked Southeastern University and took both games of the doubleheader, winning by scores of 1-0 and 5-3.

In game one, starting pitcher Sabrina Hebding pitched her second complete game shutout of the season in which she only allowed three hits. Hebding, who also went seven innings without issuing a walk, is now 3-0 on the season with an impressive 1.12 earned run average over 25 innings.

It was also the sixth shutout win for the Warriors in seven total wins (7-2 overall, 2-0 The Sun Conference) so far this season.

Although the Fire had a strong pitching performance from their starter in game one as well, the Warriors did enough to win the game by scoring one run in the second inning and relying on good pitching and defense to close the game.

Meghan Lindell and Cassidy Roberts led the way at the plate as Lindell went one-for-two and scored the lone run of the game while Roberts went two-for-three with the hit to right field that scored Lindell.

Game two was a little different from game one as both teams posted much better hitting performances, but again the game was tight as Southeastern (8-4, 0-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to get within two.

The Warriors started off the scoring in the first inning when Ka'Deisha McCowen scored off of an error and then came around to score again in the third inning after an RBI single to right by Victoria Atkinson.

In the fourth inning, Laura Borders hit an RBI double scoring Samantha Rolfe, and then McCowen brought in Anna Schutzler with an RBI ground out to make it 5-0.

The Warriors' starting pitcher in game two was Raven White, who coming into the game had not yet allowed a single run until the fifth inning when the Fire finally broke through. White, who had started her season with 19 innings without allowing a run, would still go on to earn the win and improve to 4-0 on the season with 20 innings pitched and a 1.05 ERA while Kaitlin Cockroft got the save after shutting down the Fire in the final two innings while allowing only one hit.

"I am extremely proud of how our team played today," said Head Coach Laura Tucker. "They were determined to get two wins today, and they played with a lot of heart and focus. Our pitching was phenomenal and our defense was solid. Our hitters got big hits with runners in scoring position. Overall I am pleased with how our team played two full seven inning games and never gave up. It was a great way to start conference play and I'm looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish."

The Warriors will head back home to start a 14-game home stand against seven different opponents, starting with Chestnut Hill College on Sunday, March 4, at Nancy Nichols Field for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
