BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 24, 2018) – The finale of the No. 25 Webber International University baseball team's series with Ave Maria University required some extra-inning fireworks to decide a winner as senior
Chris Medina blasted a two-run walk off home run to send the Warriors to a 5-3 victory in 13 innings over the Gyrenes. It was the second game of a doubleheader between the two teams on Saturday at the Heart of Florida Field as Webber defeated Ave Maria 9-3 in the first game of the day.
Webber used the three-game sweep to improve to .500 in Sun Conference play at 3-3 while also raising its record to 7-9 overall. Ave Maria, meanwhile, fell to 6-15 and 1-8.
In the third and final game of the series, Webber took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh and then needed to add a run in the eighth to tie it at 3-3. From there,
Jesse Coleman and the Gyrene's pitching staff battled back and forth, getting out of jams and shutting down the opposition for four and a half more innings until the bottom of the 13th when Medina jumped on the first pitch he saw from Andrew Giddens and left no doubt as he crushed it over the wall in left field.
In all, Coleman (2-2) finished with five innings of work, allowing only two hits while striking out six to help Webber to the three-game sweep.
Webber's starter in the final game,
Juan Terron, pitched six good innings only allowing one run and six hits while striking out six himself.
"It was a good weekend for us," said Head Coach
Brad Niethammer. "Any time you can sweep in TSC play, you had to play good baseball. We are moving in the right direction. Our goal is to continue to get better each game. We have a few days off to get back to work and be ready for the next game."
In the first game of the day on Saturday, the Warriors had a slow start offensively until in the fifth inning when they put up five runs to take the lead for good.
Michel Dagenais got the scoring started for Webber with a two-run single to tie the game 2-2, and then Coleman came through at the plate as well, hitting a three-run home run to right field to score Dagenais and Medina to make it 5-2.
The Warriors would tack on two more runs in both the sixth and the eighth innings to back starting pitcher
Doug Pearl (2-0), who finished with seven innings pitched, two runs allowed and seven strikeouts before
Brady Mintell earned his first save of the season with two innings in relief.
The series with the Gyrenes was the beginning of a 13-game home stand for the Warriors, who will remain at home to battle the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) on Saturday, March 3, at 1 p.m. followed by a doubleheader against the same team on Sunday, March 4, starting at 1 p.m. on the Heart of Florida Field.
