Men’s basketball upsets No. 19 Keiser on Senior Day

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 17, 2018) – In the last game of the 2017-18 season for the Webber International University men's basketball team, the Warriors gave their home fans something to get excited about and had a come-from-behind victory against No. 19 Keiser University, 82-74, on Thursday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

The Warriors found themselves trailing the Seahawks 48-37 at the half, but started the second half with a huge 19-2 run to take a 56-50 lead with 12:34 remaining in the contest.

Webber's 19 points during the game-changing run came from Osandai Vaughn (8), Tommie Luke (4), Joseph Serrano (4) and Nikita Orap (3).

From there, Webber continued the run of momentum and went ahead by nine at 69-60 with 7:27 on the clock as Orap scored back-to-back baskets followed by Vaughn scoring each of Webber's next eight points.

The Warriors equaled their largest lead of the game on a layup by Austin Evans to make the score 71-61 with 5:45 to go.

In all, Webber won the second half 45-26 to send its five seniors (Vaughn, Sheldon Durant, Obi Romeo, Serrano and Johnathan Childs) off as winners in the final game of their collegiate careers.

A huge part of the second half charge from the Warriors was Vaughn, who led the way for the Warriors with 20 of his 29 points coming in the second half. Vaughn also had 10 rebounds to give him a double-double in the final game of his career, his fifth double-double of the season as a whole. Lastly, Vaughn's first two points of the game, a pair of free throws with 12:48 to go in the first half, made him a 1,000-point scorer for his collegiate career.

Other Warrior standouts included Luke with 18 points, four steals and four rebounds; Evans trying a career-high with 10 points and adding four rebounds; Serrano with nine points; Orap right behind him with eight points; and Childs and Romeo each with four points. Romeo also tied his career-high with 13 rebounds and had two blocks, playing what was arguably one of his most effective games of the entire season.

"Tonight was a very satisfying win," said Head Coach Allen Corbin. "We have been struggling lately, and I really wanted to win for my seniors. I also think it was extremely important for our young guys to build for the future. This season had many ups and down, and I hope our guys will use these experiences to grow as young men. I hope in my first year here we started to develop a culture of excellence that will continue for many years to come. I really enjoyed working with this team and believe that the future is bright at Webber."

Webber finished the year with a winning record at home (8-6), but was 11-14 overall and 7-11 in The Sun Conference, just missing out on qualifying for The Sun Conference Tournament by one game. Keiser, the second-place team in the conference, dropped to 19-9 and 13-5.
