Warriors upset on home court in TSC Tourney Championship match

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 10, 2018) – In a championship clash between the best team at home in The Sun Conference and the hottest team in the conference, the first-seeded Webber International University women's volleyball team fell to third-seeded the College of Coastal Georgia, 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-14, 25-20), on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Webber (23-6) entered the championship undefeated on its home court at 10-0. Coastal Georgia (22-11), meanwhile, came into Saturday's match on a five-match winning streak that featured victories over first-place Webber in the last week of the regular season and over second-seeded Southeastern in the TSC semifinals.

After CCG closed out the opening set on a 5-1 run, the Warriors fought back in the second set and used an early 6-0 run to lead 6-1. Webber then led 8-4, 12-5 and then 15-6 after a 7-1 run to take control. The Mariners battled back to within five twice at 19-14 and 20-15 before the Warriors went back ahead by eight multiple times in the later stages of the set and ultimately won the set by eight.

Unfortunately, the Warriors could not capitalize on the momentum and never led in the third set. CCG jumped out to leads of 5-0, 7-1 and 10-4 in the third set, and then Webber used a four-point spurt to make it 10-8 before a big 10-2 Mariner run doubled up the score at 20-10 in favor of CCG.

It an extremely tight fourth set in which neither team led by more than two until the very end. Webber scored three straight times to jump ahead 18-16 and looked poised to have a fighting shot at forcing a deciding fifth set. However, despite the Warriors continuing to fight their hearts out, CCG used an important 6-0 run inside a bigger 9-2 run to stun the home crowd and steal the championship.

Impressively, Svenja Koenig and Salla Rautiainen both finished with five blocks.

Nayrelis Pantoja Santos finished with 37 digs, and Hannah Tannone had 14. Valerie Vargas and Gilmary Ramos matched each other with 14 assists, and Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu finished with 10 kills for the second match in a row in the TSC Tournament. Ramos also added three service aces.

Webber hit -.140 percent in its rough third set and was held to a hitting percentage of less than .050 percent in both the first and fourth sets, which the Warriors also dropped.

In the end, Webber ran into the hottest team in The Sun Conference and was denied its third straight TSC Tournament Championship and second such title under its second-year head coach Lindsey Martin.

Webber, which is currently receiving votes in the NAIA National Coaches' Poll, will now to have to wait and see if its name is called as at an-large bid for the NAIA Opening Round or not. The 44-team field for the NAIA National Championship will be announced on Monday, November 12, and then the Opening Round will be played on Saturday, November 17.
