BRUNSWICK, Ga. (October 31, 2018) – The first-place Webber International University women's volleyball team fell to third-place the College of Coastal Georgia 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) on Wednesday night.
Webber (22-5 overall, 14-2 The Sun Conference), which has still locked up the number-one seed in The Sun Conference Tournament and earned a bye into the semifinals, will now have to wait until Saturday, November 3, to see if it is the outright champions or the co-champions of the regular season.
The Warriors got off to a rough start in the first set, hitting -.032 percent compared to .316 percent from Coastal Georgia (18-11, 10-5). It did not get much better for Webber, which finished with percentages of .059 percent in the second set and .030 in the third.
Tied 20-20, Webber lost the first set on a 5-0 Mariner run, and then a 7-2 run for Coastal Georgia in the second set gave the Mariners an 18-13 lead they would not relinquish.
The Warriors looked to answer in the final set, leading with scores of 6-0, 12-8 and 15-13 before Coastal Georgia took advantage of another 5-0 run and never looked back.
It was also a low statistical performance for Webber individually as
Emily Bowen recorded seven kills,
Gilmary Ramos had 11 assists and
Nayrelis Pantoja Santos barely kept her double-digit digs streak alive with 12. Ramos nearly had a double-double, adding nine digs.
Webber Head Women's Volleyball Coach
Lindsey Martin said, "Tonight was not the result we wanted to end the regular season on, but it doesn't take away from all the great things and all of the hard work we've done this season. 14-2 and regular-season conference champions is a great feat. Now, as we look toward the conference tournament, we have to refocus and work on our consistency in all phases of the game."
Next up, Webber will enter the postseason with a bye into The Sun Conference Tournament semifinals. After the quarterfinal round at various sites on Tuesday, November 6, Webber will then host the semifinals on Friday, November 9 and the TSC Championship match on Saturday, November 10.
Before that, Southeastern University (21-3, 13-2) will play Florida Memorial University (11-13, 4-11) in three days on Saturday morning for its right to a share of the regular-season title with Webber.
The Warriors are currently undefeated on their home court at 9-0. Stay tuned to
