Warriors come up short on Senior Day

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 27, 2018) – The Webber International University men's soccer team finished up its 2018 campaign with a 2-0 loss to Keiser University on Saturday during Webber's Senior Day on Warrior Field. Both of the Seahawks' goals came in the second half.

It was the final home match for Thomas Debladis, Leandro Fonteles, Baxter Smith, Enzo Di Benedetto, Finn Shepherd, David Henderson and Armani D'Agostino. The class featured one four-year player, one three-year player and five one-year graduate students for the Warriors.

Smith and Di Benedetto each led Webber with two shots against Keiser while freshman Mateo Sassoni, junior Bryan Meija and junior Aldo Lopez each added another attempt.

Head Men's Soccer Coach Neil Cockburn said after the match, "Unfortunately we could not get a win for the seniors today; but once again, the players played with heart and passion as they usually do. I am proud of all my seniors for their hard work throughout the years and the program wishes them the best."

Thomas Debladis, a graduate student and goalkeeper from Paris, France, made six saves on Saturday. In his lone season with the Warriors, Debladis started all 14 matches and finished with 105 saves, good for an average of 7.50 saves per match. He entered the day ranking 11th in all of the NAIA in saves per match and was 12th in total saves, good enough for first in The Sun Conference in both categories. Debladis' career-high in saves came against Middle Georgia State University on September 3 when he made 13 stops.

Baxter Smith, a graduate student and forward from Stowmarket, England, led Webber with 11 goals on the season and 24 points, making 12 starts in 14 matches. He began the matchup on Saturday ranked 32nd in the NAIA in goals per match (0.850) and was 48th in total goals. He was also top five in The Sun Conference in points per match, total points, goals per match and total goals. Smith scored in eight different matches on the season, his only year at Webber, and had three two-goal performances.

Armani D'Agostino, a senior midfielder from Canton, Ohio, who is the lone four-year player for the Warriors from their 2018 senior class, had one goal in 2018 and two for his career. He started six times in 14 mtaches this year and played in 44 career matches in total.

On the defensive side of the ball, David Henderson, a senior from Mid Calder, Scotland, was a three-year player for the Warriors. He was a team captain in 2018 and was a vocal leader on defense all season long. Henderson started 11 times this season in 12 total matches, and played in 33 career matches.

Enzo Di Benedetto, another graduate student and a midfielder from Marseille, France, finished with one goal in his lone year at Webber, and was third on the team in shots. He made 11 starts this season and played in 13 total matches.

Leandro Fonteles, a graduate student and midfielder from Manaus, Brazil, made five starts in 11 total matches in his only season at Webber.

Last but not least, Finn Shepherd, a graduate student and midfielder from Essex, England, saw action in six matches on the year.

Webber concluded its season with a record of 4-9-2 overall and 1-8 in The Sun Conference. Keiser, which was receiving votes in the NAIA national coaches' poll only two weeks ago, improved its record to 10-3-2 and 6-2-1 as the Seahawks moved into sole possession of third place in the conference standings.

Despite their record, 2018 was a big improvement for the Warriors after Webber fell to Keiser by a score of 7-2 in its last match of 2017. During the current season, all of Webber's matches until the final one on Saturday were decided by one goal or less, showcasing the Warriors' toughness and determination to never give in no matter who they were playing.
