BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 24, 2018) – Backed by 15 blocks as a team and an 18-kill performance by
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu, the Webber International University women's volleyball team overcame rough third and fourth sets to defeat Keiser University 3-1 (25-22, 25-12, 20-25, 27-25) on Wednesday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Webber (21-4 overall, 13-1 The Sun Conference) saw
Julia Ferraro finish with a career-high eight blocks, all of which were assisted blocks, while
Salla Rautiainen added a career-high of her own in blocks with seven.
Svenja Koenig matched her career-high with five blocks and
Kalameli Matautia added three blocks.
All of the blocks from Ferrao, Rautiainen, Koenig and Matautia were assisted blocks. The only two solo blocks on the night came from Salanoa-Sagapolu, who in all finished with three combined blocks to match Matautia.
The final two blocks on the stat sheet for the Warriors came from
Emily Bowen, who also added 13 kills.
Gilmary Ramos led the way in assists with 25, a career-high for four-set matches.
Nayrelis Pantoja Santos again paced all participants with 21 digs and was followed by
Hannah Tannone with 15 digs.
After the Warriors overcame a 21-20 deficit in the first set and ran away with the second set to take a two-sets-to-none lead, Webber never led the in third set after four straight Seahawk points gave Keiser (16-4, 5-9) a 12-9 advantage.
In the final set, Webber led 19-11, but a huge 10-1 run for Keiser made it 21-20 Seahawks.
After the teams traded 3-0 runs and then split the next two points to make the score 25-24 Keiser, Webber rallied to finish it off with back-to-back kills by Salanaoa-Sagapolu and Bowen and a Keiser attack error.
Webber will now host its Senior Day for Salanoa-Sagapolu at 5 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center against St. Thomas University on Saturday, October 27. Webber's final regular-season contest will then follow at 7 p.m. at the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick, Georgia, on Wednesday, October 31.
