BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 27, 2018) – In a game that had its original start time pushed up a half an hour, the Webber International University men's basketball team and No. 23 Warner University gave the fans more than they expected as the two teams battled for an additional 10 minutes after regulation. The Warriors held on in the second overtime period to grab a 91-90 victory over the Royals in front of a frenzied crowd on Saturday evening inside at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
In a game that featured five double-doubles, two of them came from Webber (10-9 overall, 6-6 TSC) as
Osandai Vaughn scored 29 points while adding a career-high 15 rebounds. Vaughn also finished with three steals, two assists and a career-high two blocks, including one crucial block to essentially win the game.
Johnathan Childs had Webber's other double-double as he scored 17 points with 10 rebounds while shooting over 50 percent from the field (7-13; 53.8 percent) and adding three blocks.
Vaughn and Childs were two of four Warriors to finish with two or more blocks as
Tommie Luke added three and
Nicholas Blocker had two. Luke and Blocker were the other two Warriors in double figures in scoring on Saturday as Luke finished with 18 points, and Blocker finished with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Luke and Blocker also each grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
In the second overtime period, Webber led 88-86 one minute in after Childs scored on a lob from Luke to make it 88-86, and then led 91-86 just over a minute later after three straight made free throws.
After a free throw by the Royals' Khalil Ozuna with 9.6 seconds left in the second overtime made it 91-90, Warner (16-8, 7-5) maintained possession with 2.7 seconds left after Ozuna missed his second free throw attempt.
From there, Vaughn earned a huge block on a mid-range jumper from Ozuna that could have put the Royals ahead, and then
Obi Romeo grabbed the loose ball with only one second left. In all, Ozuna finished with 37 points to lead all scorers on Saturday, but it was the blocked shot by Vaughn on Ozuna at the end of the game that made the difference.
"I am exhausted, so I can't even imagine how the players feel," said Head Men's Basketball Coach
Allen Corbin. "I'm not sure I have ever been so proud of a team. Blood, sweat, tears, family and toughness is what we are all about. I love these guys and my staff so much. I also want to thank all the faculty, students and community fans for coming out. Go Warriors."
Toward the end of the first overtime, Vaughn scored four straight points to put the Warriors ahead by two at 86-84 before Ozuna answered only seconds later to tie it up with 1:14 on the clock.
After an offensive foul on Webber, Warner had possession with 15.7 seconds left, but a contested layup by Nick Macon with two seconds left was missed as Childs brought in the rebound with 0.8 seconds on the clock to force the second overtime.
At the end of regulation, Webber led 78-76 after two free throws by Blocker with 3:24 remaining, and that score remained until with under 30 seconds left, a Warrior turnover led to a game-tying jumper from Warner's Melton Sanders with only 18.6 seconds to go.
After Vaughn's layup attempt to win the game was blocked, Webber kept ahold of possession with a chance to win the game again with 6.6 seconds left, but another Warrior turnover, this time with only two seconds remaining, gave the Royals the ball back in a dead ball scenario, with Warner needing to go three-quarters court to win the game.
The Royals got off a good look from three to win it from Sanders, but his fall-away shot air balled to bring forward the two periods of free basketball.
One of the biggest statistical differences in the game was the free throw numbers as the Warriors were great from the foul line at 82.4 percent (28-34). Luke led the way with a perfect 9-for-9 mark from the stripe while Blocker and Childs were also perfect at 4-for-4 and 2-for-2, respectively. Additionally, Vaughn was 9-for-11, and Romeo and
Nikita Orap were both 2-for-4 from the line while Warner shot only 63.6 percent (14-22) from the line as a team.
Another big game for the Warriors came from
Joseph Serrano, who finished with eight rebounds and two assists. Romeo and
Austin Evans also had key moments throughout the game to help Webber secure the victory as they each finished with five boards.
In all, seven Warriors finished with five or more rebounds as Webber dominated the glass 63-49 overall,
Next up, the final month of Webber's regular season will kick off on Thursday, February 1, as the Warriors host the College of Coastal Georgia inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center at 7:30 p.m. Webber's win over Warner on Saturday pushed the Warriors into fifth place in The Sun Conference standings, 0.5 games behind the Fire of Southeastern University and 0.5 games ahead of the Mariners of Coastal Georgia.
