BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 27, 2018) – Webber International University women's basketball senior
Ashley Perry nearly recorded the first triple-double of her career as she finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Perry's big game, however, came in a losing effort as the Warriors fell to Warner University, 58-51, in a low scoring affair on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Perry has now scored in double digits in 10 straight games and has added six or more rebounds in nine of those outings.
In addition to Perry,
Breyonna Reed has a gutsy performance as she finished with 12 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Montrese Weller added nine points and five rebounds while
Jakella Davis scored a career-high six points and three other Warriors (
Emmarrie Carmen,
Tiffany Zito, and
Shayla McPhearson) each reached six rebounds.
One of the biggest differences in the game was the 3-point battle as Webber struggled from beyond the arc at only 27.3 percent (3-11) while Warner connected on nine 3-pointers as a team.
The Royals closed the final six minutes of the opening half on a 10-3 run to take an eight-point lead (32-24) into the locker room.
Webber answered by scoring each of the first six points of the second half to make it 32-30 as Reed and Perry scored on back-to-back fast break layups.
Webber then trailed by 10 in the fourth quarter as Warner scored 16 seconds in to go up by eight and then scored just under a minute later to make it 46-36. Next, seven straight points by Webber got it back to within three at 46-43 as Weller connected on a three and Perry added two more fast break layups, the latter of which came with 7:42 remaining.
Yet again in the fourth quarter, the Warriors trailed by 10 (53-43), but Webber went on an 8-2 run over a three-minute span to make it 55-51 with only 58 seconds left. Webber then elected to play out the next possession instead of fouling down four, and gave up an offensive rebound before being forced to foul and put Warner on the free throw line, where it converted on back-to-back attempts to make it a six-point game.
A missed layup on Webber's next possession signified the end of the Warriors comeback attempt.
Saturday's game was a chance for the Warriors to put themselves alone in sixth place in The Sun Conference standings, the final spot for the conference's postseason tournament, but instead, it is the Royals who now sit in sixth place with Webber needing to make up a game to get back into the race.
Webber fell to 7-15 overall on the season and 2-10 in The Sun Conference while Warner won its third straight game and improved to 12-12 and 3-9.
Webber will remain at home to host the College of Coastal Georgia at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 1.
