Baseball gets off to 0-2 start

LAKE WALES, Fla. (January 27, 2018) – One day after dropping its season opener to the Royals at home, the No. 25 Webber International University baseball team was again doubled up by Warner University as the Warriors fell by a final score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon on Warner's home field in Lake Wales, Florida.

After being held to two hits on Friday (Jan. 26), Webber (0-2) came up with eight hits as a team on Saturday as Marcus Begg, Alex Rodriguez and Tanner Williams each finished with two knocks.

Unlike the first game of the series where Warner (2-0) did all of its scoring in the first inning, the first four innings of Saturday's game featured a pitchers dual as Brady Mintell (0-1) and Jaryd Clary (1-0) kept it scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Warner pushed through a run on a double play.

Down 2-0 in the top of the sixth, Webber cut its deficit in half as Begg led off with a double to right field and then scored on a single to right field by A. Rodriguez. In the eighth inning, Webber again cut the score in half as a knock to center by Williams scored A. Rodriguez to make it 4-2, and then a hit by pitch by Napo Ballestero loaded the bases with only one out, but the Warriors were unable to capitalize on the scoring chance.

"We had a few opportunities to put runs up but just didn't get it done," said Head Coach Brad Niethammer. "To win close games, you have to have timely hitting. I thought we pitched well again, but we just came up short on the offensive end for the second day in a row. We will get back to work on Monday to keep working on getting better."

Mintell started the game on fire for the Warriors, retiring the side in order during each of the first two innings and then picking off the only runner to reach against him to that point in the third, but despite pushing runners to third base in both the second and fourth innings, Clary kept Webber in check, finishing with only two hits and one walk allowed during his four innings of work to start the game.

Starting on Friday, February 2, the Warriors will play a fellow nationally ranked opponent for the first time in 2018 as Webber hosts No. 12 Georgia Gwinnett College for three games over three days back in Babson Park, Florida.
