Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Senior trio comes up big as men’s basketball defeats Wildcats

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 13, 2018) – The grouping of seniors Osandai Vaughn, Johnathan Childs and Joseph Serrano proved to be the difference for the Webber International University men's basketball team as the trio helped lead the Warriors over Johnson & Wales University, 74-67, on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Vaughn tied his career-high with 30 points on a strong 10-for-16 mark from the field. Vaughn also added four 3-pointers, including one to virtually win the game, and had seven rebounds and three steals.

Childs finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the fourth double-double of his senior season. Childs was 7-of-10 from the free throw line while matching his career-highs in blocks and assists with four blocks and three helpers.

Another senior, Serrano, may have had only four points, but he was great on the boards and passing the ball as he finished with a career-high 10 rebounds from the guard spot and added four assists.

The final strong performance of the game for Webber came from junior Nikita Orap, who connected on three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points. Orap has hit three or more 3-pointers in each of his last four games.

Thanks to Vaughn (4-5), Orap (3-7), Childs (1-1), Garrett Woodmansee (1-1) and Sheldon Durant's (1-3) marks from 3-point range, Webber was able to finish the game over 58 percent (10-17; 58.8%) from three compared to only 30.8 percent (12-39) for the Wildcats, a key difference in the game.

With the win, Webber's record improved to 7-8 overall and 4-5 in The Sun Conference as the Warriors have now gone back-and-forth between wins and losses in each of their last six TSC games. Additionally, the Warriors pulled into a tie with Thomas University for sixth place in the TSC standings. Johnson & Wales fell to 4-15 and 2-7.

Webber led by as much as 17 in the second half (54-37 with 12:44 left), but the Wildcats came all the way back to tie it up at 60-60 after a 23-6 run with a little bit over five minutes remaining.

Austin Evans and the Warriors immediately answered with two free throws to retake the lead, and then a layup by Childs with 3:31 on the clock gave Webber another lead and sparked an 8-0 Warrior run that made it 70-62 with only 1:13 left to play. Childs accounted for each of the first six points during the final run for Webber.

Back-to-back scores for JWU got it back down to three at 70-67 before, after nearly loosing possession of the ball, Vaughn launched a desperation three from well behind the 3-point line that went straight in and put Webber ahead 73-67 with only 23 ticks left.

"I am so proud of our guys' ability to continue to fight through adversity," said Head Coach Allen Corbin. "We had a lot of things go wrong tonight, but we stayed together and battled for 40 minutes. My staff is doing an incredible job of helping me prepare the team and giving suggestions. We are all growing together and improving daily."

Webber led 11-2 early in the contest before JWU got to within three at 14-11 seven minutes into the action. JWU then got within one point at 24-23 after a 3-pointer with 8:08 left in the first half before Webber expanded its lead to eight (31-23) three minutes later after five straight points by Vaughn and two free throws by Serrano.

The Warriors then took a nine-point lead at 37-28 into the locker room at halftime as Vaughn scored each of the last six points of the half, finishing with a layup with 43 seconds left and a jumper with only two seconds on the clock.

Next up for Webber will be Ave Maria University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 18. It will be the first time so far this season the Warriors will close out a regular-season series against a fellow TSC team.
