Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors upended by nationally recognized Southeastern

LAKELAND, Fla. (November 16, 2017) – The Webber International University men's basketball team went on an 11-0 run early in the first half, but ultimately the Warriors fell to a team receiving votes in the NAIA coaches' top-25 poll, Southeastern University, 98-67 on Thursday night.

It was the first Sun Conference game of the season for Webber under its first-year head coach Allen Corbin as the Warriors fell back to .500 on the season overall at 2-2 and moved to 0-1 in conference action.

After Southeastern (3-1 overall, 1-0 TSC) scored the first seven points of the game, Webber answered as a layup by Nikita Orap tied it at 7-7 just over four minutes in, and then back-to-back scores by Johnathan Childs, capped by a fast break dunk, made it 11-7 Warriors just under the 15-minute mark to finish an 11-0 Webber run.

Webber then led 13-9 with 14:11 left in the first half after two free throws by Osandai Vaughn, and then went ahead at 15-14 after a coast-to-coast layup by Garrett Woodmansee with over 11 and a half minutes to go in the half.

That is, however, where Southeastern took over and began a barrage of blocked shots and 3-pointers not often seen. The Fire made nine 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes and 17 seconds of the first half and went ahead at 29-17 with 8:39 on the clock. After a 3-pointer by Woodmansee for Webber, Southeastern took a 20-point lead at 43-23 with 4:33 left until the intermission.

Childs led the Warriors with 10 points at the half while Southeastern's Wesley Johnson finished the opening 20 minutes with seven blocks.

Webber won the battle for second chance points 17-10 as the Warriors brought in 17 offensive rebounds as a team, led by five from Childs and four from Andre Brooks. The Warriors also out-rebounded the Fire 43-40 overall.

Vaughn finished with 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Warriors in both categories, and was followed by Childs with 12 points and seven rebounds while Woodmansee finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Joseph Serrano finished with six points, six rebounds and three assists, while Brooks also had six rebounds in total.

Next up, Webber will host a Sun Conference game for the first time this season as the Warriors welcome Ave Maria University to the Sabbagh Athletic Center for a 4 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, November 18.
