Box Score BABSON PARK, - On Saturday, #1 Webber International University played host to #2 St. Thomas University in the Sun Conference Championship final. In an absolute true battle of the top two teams, the Warriors (28-2) walked away as the Champions, taking the match against the Bobcats (25-7) in four sets 25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23.
Nikki McDaniel had a double-double with 22 kills and 13 digs, and
Katie Schueman carried much of the offensive load, tallying 13 kills while hitting .500 on the match.
Carlee Baxter had her second 50 assist night of the tournament, tallying 100 assists in two matches, and
Michelle Calderon added 28 digs.
Set one saw the Warriors take control early, jumping out to a 6-0 lead to start things off. After extending the lead to 13-4, St. Thomas would start to claw back in, cutting the lead to two at 16-14. From there, the Warriors used a 9-4 run to close out the first set and start the match with a lead.McDaniel had 6 kills in the set, and
Tessa Colden added 4 kills of her own.
Set two turned into an absolute battle. Webber started up 2-0 before St. Thomas tied it, and the team would continue to trade points early. The Warriors would eventually pull away for a 13-8 lead, but the Bobcats responded with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to one point. The teams traded back and forth again, with Webber taking a lead at 20-18. Both teams battled for points late, and the Warriors would end up prevailing and taking a 2-0 lead in the match. McDaniel had 10 kills in the set, Baxter had 15 assists, and Calderon added 10 digs.
Down and fighting for their season, St. Thomas came out strong in set three, forcing the Warriors into a 4-9 hole early on. Despite the fight by Webber, St. Thomas continued to push their lead, deepening the hole to 6-12. Webber would get it to 12-16 before the Bobcats used a 5-1 run to take a commanding lead. After a small Webber run, St. Thomas scored the final four points they needed to force a fourth set. Schueman had 4 kills in the set, and Calderon added 8 digs.
The fourth set was a battle from start to finish. The set saw the score tied 12 separate times, as well as 8 lead changes, beating out the numbers from the other three sets combined. The Warriors earned an early 5-2 lead, only to see St. Thomas use a 6-0 run to take the lead. Webber would claw back to tie it at 9-9, and both teams began trading points. At 16-16, St. Thomas used a 4-1 run to put Webber in a 17-20 hole. Webber would keep fighting, and when they earned serve at 20-22, they used a 4-0 run to take the lead, keyed by two Calderon aces. After St. Thomas sided-out,
Nikki McDaniel posted her final kill of the day to earn the set victory, along with the match and Championship.
St. Thomas was led by Shanotta Bawek with 16 kills and Whitney Battoe with 14. Dana Nowaczyk had 43 assists, and Caitlin McCluskey added 18 digs.
