Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International University women's basketball hosted Ave Maria, Thursday, in a Sun Conference match up. After a tightly contested first half, the Warriors wrestled control of the game, eventually winning out, 62-53.
Mar'Lisa Braxton, Quanthavia Stalworth and Victoria Baggett each netted 11 points. Braxton was the standout of the night, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds to post a double-double.
Ave Maria controlled the early goings, building a lead that reached as high as five points. A six-point run by the Warriors gave them their first lead with two minute left in the first quarter. The two teams would trade baskets the rest of the quarter, with the Gyrenes coming out on top, 19-16.
The second half saw Ave Maria hold the lead for six minutes. With four minutes to play before halftime, Webber International knotted the game up at 30-30, after a 7-0 run. The score would remain at 30-30, till the Gyrenes hit a buzzer-beater, sending the Warriors into halftime down, 32-30.
The second half saw Webber International turn up the intensity on offense and defense, outscoring Ave Maria 32-21.
After a rough four-minute stretch, the Warriors hunkered down on defense, forcing the Gyrenes into six turnovers. Webber International would rattle off 15-unanswered points, thanks to the opportunities created off the strong defense, to regain the lead at 50-45. Ave Maria closed out the third quarter with three made free throws to cut the Warrior lead to 50-48.
The Warriors defense was truly stifling in the final quarter, limiting Ave Maria to only five points. Webber International lead the fourth quarter wire-to-wire, seeing its lead climb as high as 11 points. The Warriors would eventually defeat the Gyrenes, 62-53.
